How did Tengus end up in Japan?



Very fascinating folklore. It almost sounds like it’s based off of real events.

I used to wonder if they were ShipWrecked Sailors who formed groups in the mountains/nature. Before the Age of Technology it would have been easier to manipulate people's superstition to survive. I think if ShipWrecked Sailors were caught in Japan it didn't go so well for them?
