And 4 of the top 10 are in New York State.

This probably comes as a surprise to most here, but not me. The Northeast has some rough parts but, for better or worse, it’s the most “segregated” in terms of crime and quality of life. The ‘burbs outside of NYC, Boston and DC are mind blowingly nice (and expensive).

That can't be correct. Alexandria, VA is a straight up ghetto. I know because I am there like once a week for work.

Shyt, just saw that Manassas park is in there. Manassas park is even more ghetto than Alexandria.

Fuk yea Rockland! Grew up there, 20 min north of the city. Can confirm, some relatively semi-rough areas can be found for sure, but overall straight easy going suburbs baby.

Mirin’ hard. I’d move to the Hudson Valley in a heartbeat if I had the scratch.

Honestly the more I traveled out of the Northeast, the more I appreciated what I grew up around. You go down South and it’s shocking how sketchy the suburban areas. Like for example the most dangerous parts of Atlanta aren’t even in Atlanta, they’re in those strip mall/cul de sac outskirts by the airport lmao. Weird ass dynamic.

Yup, I moved out but couldn't afford to move back. I miss everything about it though. Where I'm at now (Maryland) it's remarkably tough to find sprawling areas of legit neighborhoods with a little bit of land on each plot. It's all extremes everywhere I look. Either straight farmland, endless rows of townhouses, or cookie cutter new builds with 3 feet between each house.

Feel you brah. Sadly most of America is like that. Zoning regulations are a mess so developers just throw up cheap shoddy looking materials and move onto the next. Townhomes are replacing single family homes. Feels communist idk lmao. The Northeast and a select few areas of the Rust Belt are the exception to this rule. I find those new Sunbelt communities to be demoralizing AF srs. Devoid of any true community feel, lacking character. There’s nothing to be proud of or inspired by in those cookie-cutter areas. I guess most people don’t care which is why they’re so popular, but I not only notice a huge difference, I FEEL different when I’m in a charming historic community.

I don't believe that at all. Nassau County is very safe on the whole, but there are two complete crime ridden chitholes in it (Hempstead and Roosevelt). Zero chance Nassau County is safer than much more remote and less dense counties across the country.

Unless maybe the list is just counties above a certain population and smaller counties aren't included?

Yeah I mean I think it's literally impossible for a county with a population of 1.4 million to be safer than the hundreds of counties across the country with less than 100k people. Nassau is very safe overall but there's just no way that can be accurate, I don't think. The list has to be limited to counties over a certain population.

edit: OK I really didnt read the article, I was assuming it was all about crime, but it looks like they also factored in number of firefighters and policemen in each county, how close the average person lives to a hospital and firehouse, healthcare spending etc. So it's not just crime.

The list factors in number of cops/firefighters in area and distance to fire stations & hospitals... Those criteria alone likely rule out a lot of rural communities where crime is non-existent. As in places where they don't have a lot of fires, car crashes, or crime. They simply don't need a lot of cops and firefighters running around.

Also a large law enforcement presence is useful for crime preventing and solving. But its also indicative that they are 'needed' in that area.



The flaw in these types of articles/studies are. They are using reported data. The safest communities in America won't make this list because nobody can find them in any official reporting systems during the research. Another major issue is they've included a lot of affluent urban areas. But they likely aren't factoring in less then half a mile outside of that jurisdiction there are shootings, car jacking, robberies, etc.


As a lot of miscers have already testified some of those places have plenty of crime.

This. Don't get me wrong Nassau county is very safe on the whole. But if we're talking about strictly crime, it is automatically disqualified simply due to a total chit hole like Hempstead being in Nassau county. Crime is almost non existent in the northern parts of the county though. The wealth is ridiculous.
