The human being a spiritual entity controlling a physical body. The body is designed in a way to be able to do most tasks that the soul wishes to do, hence why it's different to that of an animal's body (chimp or lion). Apart from that it's just flesh. Without the soul a human being would just be reacting to external stimulus in a predetermined manner.
Spirits are non-corporeal beings, in that they were never given a physical body, so they reside in the spirit realm. To get an idea of what the spiritual realm is, think of the last time you had a dream that felt real and that you genuinely thought was real - this is the spirit realm.
Magic(k), whether white or black magic, left hand or right hand path, involves contacting spirits and paying homage to them through various rituals, ceremonies, and sacrifices, and getting them to do your bidding.
From Australian Aboriginals to Native Americans (South and North), humans all practise some type of spirit worship, where they do exactly what I described (contacting spirits) to do their bidding. Prior to Christianization, all people were pagans and practised the same type of religion, except for the Jews, even though they've slipped up on multiple occasions. Witch-doctor, shaman, yogi, warlock, is all the same thing.
Demons and satan are what we call these pagan deities or 'gods' from a Christian point of view, since those names are adjectives to what they are seperate and opposing to the God Of Abraham - whether you call them fallen angels, aliens, annunaki,, gods etc, they are all describing the same thing.
To actually make magic work, you need to have a certain propensity towards spiritual matters and you need to earn favour from spirits - they are intelligent beings who chose who they work with carefully. They can be summoned, but really they summon you to summon them, if that makes sense.

The demon does not work with a human unless it can take advantage of it and control the human, they simple won't respond to the incantations, etc.
Sacrificing life can be symboling, but it also provides energy to the spirit - human lives, especially those of people with less sin are the highest in energy released. Hence the child sacrifice and child rape by satanists.
