First day off bjj/judo today

Practice starts in a few hours. Today is my trial. I’m feeling a bit nervous cause I don’t really speak to many people these days and probably throwing myself into an established clique. Hopefully it’s a good group of guys. I ll try to fuk them up but I m rusty af. Will update this thread if I don’t pussy out. I need to go, I’m recovering from a brutal break up and need to try new chit.

My best advice to you is do not do this

You'll quickly find out how good the black belt instructor is if you do.

Stay humble and leave your ego at the door

Bow the mat any time and every time you get on or off

Shower and keep your nails trimmed as low as possible not only for them but so you don't have a fingernail bend backwards

Never try to "win", those win feelings are why they have tournaments

You are there to learn so the mat/academy is the laboratory

If you stay humble you'll meet some of the nicest killers you will ever meet

Hopefully you don't write a novel like you did for your date.

Mirin though, would like to get into some kind of combat sport, probably will once I move back to Halifax and get my own place.

I'm not a very athletic person and I don't think I would excel at something like this, might be worth doing just to know basic self defense.

I think you would be good at something like bjj and judo cause of your strength. Once you got some technique I could see you being lethal af. lol I ll keep the story short.

I do tend to underestimate myself… My biggest concern is I don't like taking a hit.

What you mean BJJ/Judo lol? Which one is it brah?

As advised I wouldn't try "fuk anyone up". Everyone hates that spazzy white belt. Nobody wants to roll with that guy. Don't be that guy. Enjoy yourself, learn, make some new brahs and that's it.

I disagree, establish dominance and then when you have its time to make friends.

Not exactly sure. It’s a bjj class but the school is listed as judo. I m guessing different coaches there have different back grounds?? Ok ok I won’t be a douche. I m going to resist hard af though.

You don’t get hit often in bjj. Not intentionally at least. You can get slammed, twisted, elbowed by accident , chit like that

Lots of gyms run multiple classes like that. I'd take the Judo classes they have on too if I were you. I do both, 2 separate gyms though.

You just want to flow with it. When someone locks in a sub you're not escaping even if you want to. You're child's play to these guys. You don't want to injure someone by spazzing out, it's not a fight. Leave the ego at home.

Pretty sure most the other classes were full. A spot just opened up for this class supposingly

I was a white belt years ago for about a year. Only went twice a month. So I m new but not new new.

Ok I ll flow, but I m using my power anytime they try to pin, submit, etc. is that fair?

Yeah it's fair, but it's a great way to blow your gas tank before you switch partners lol. You're there to learn technique first and foremost. Get that down and you'll know where and when to apply strength when required. I'm 6'2, 215 lbs and running a decent sized dose of test/deca. I can muscle my way out of a lot of things if needed but its simply not needed unless in comp. You'll get that into your head when the guy half your size ties you up in knots.

Then why are you talking like your "new new?"

You should know exactly how much force you should use if you've tried it before.

I've also tried it before (but do Muay Thai instead) so I know that full power in BJJ is never advised. Go 60% power and ramp it up to 70% if necessary on your first day.

Stop letting your insecurities drive you. The guys in the gym aren't looking to test you or rank you on your first day. They come in 3 to 5 times a week throughout the year, they don't want stupid injury from an insecure white belt - they want to continue coming to class to learn and drill.

On your first day, you wanna ease into this.

Ok ok I ll ease in. Honestly I started to know the guys and we were young and would go pretty hard. I remember the older black belts not fuking with us often. If they did they d do a round and be done.

I know, I remember getting triangled on my first day of class last time. I went hard on some twink and he got me.

I just got back from the class, and it’s not for me. The majority were white belts, mostly high schoolers, with a few guys in their 40s who were also white belts. There was a 12-year-old girl with a gray belt. The class was led by a woman and a 55-year-old purple belt, which was alright, I guess. They didn’t let me spar at the end…. I’m really looking for a group of tougher guys to train with, but this was supposed to be one of the top-ranked schools in the area. I’m not sure what I’m missing.

As i walked out, the gym owner, who is a black belt (who wasn't teaching), said bye to everyone except me. Thought it was rude. Probably not signing up there. i ll sit on it for the rest of the week..

I mean it’s fine to have some tough rolls.

But locking up and using brute force to stop people from advancing position instead of learning framing properly won’t benefit you learning in the slightest.

Learning to do things like shrimping away, not exposing limbs, how to apply force and get light to move around, what grips to break etc…. Will go a much longer way to getting you up to speed quickly and less chance of injuries from going super hard before you even have muscle memory of how to perform.
We seem to be experimenting some technological differences.

Sure but you missed the point. The gym sucked. I probably would have wrecked the whole class day 1. They didn’t let me spar. I need to find a better school.
