holy fuk at people overthinking it.

when someone asks you "how's it going?"

do you respond "well, I'm not actually going anywhere and your phrasing of the question places a preposition before a conjugated verb so technically your grammar is incorrect..."

inb4 not preposition or conj verb

100 dollars, he stole it initially
30 more dollars, he gained from the stolen money

He lost 130 dollars in cash, and 70 dollars in assets by the end of the exchange.

70.00$ assets + 130.00$ cash = 200.00$ in total

But the question is how much money did he lose, so it's 130.00$ cash

The question is not very clear either, the person who wrote it is probably just fuking with people. You could get many different answers that are completely logical simply because the poster of the answer was unclear.

$200 lost because you have to count the orginal $100 that was stolen

$100 stolen + $70 stock + $30 change = $200

You're ignoring that the $70 item was paid for with $100.00 cash you can't just ignore that it went back in the drawer.

Just keep track of what changed hands in your head if you want to talk through it like a story.

$100 cash goes out
$100 cash goes in
$70 item goes out
$30 cash goes out

top 2 transactions offset so ultimately what the story lost was $30.00 cash and the cost of the $70.00 item since we don't know markup we don't know cost and can't answer the question in monetary terms.

We are talking about how much cash helost, not his revenue

If I give you 100$, take it back, give you another 100$, and then take it again, you've lost 200$ dollars, not 100$

You guys are looking at this subjectively because it is a single man messing with his business instead of multiple people. Pretend it's a different stranger each time and your answer will change.

Now that I think about it the owner lost nothing because stores up there prices to counter theft.

This question is all about perspective.

Just say the thief never came back, but rather another stranger came in and bought $70 worth of items with a $100 bill. Then you could say the business is down $100 because the thief never returned with said $100. However, the store owner doesn't know if that stranger got the $100 from the thief or not. The store owner doesn't know if after the thief left if he will ever see another customer again. If we knew the amount of customers entering the store was a constant then you can say how much the business owner would have lost whether the thief came back into the store or not.

Loss of earnings vs actual loss are different things.

Why? Just look at the end result of what IS NOT in the store at the end of day.

At the end of the day after all things are done changing hands the store has $30 less and $70 item less

It has 100 of unnaccounted for dollars less. That's it. The new transaction is accounted for.

Thats why this question is impossible to answer correctly because it can go many ways.

Nope it's clearly 130, or 170, or 70, or 30, 200, or even 350. It's clearly not 100.

I've argued both sides now including that one. You're right that the only thing that you would see on the books is the cash drawer being off $100 since the sale transaction is accounted for.

F I dunno man. I keep trying to think too deeply into the situation which is why I was trying to evaluate what exactly the store ended up with less off after all transactions are complete.

Humor me here.

lets assume the store is completely empty except for two things. $100 bill and an item priced at $70.

When the $100 bill is stolen the store only has $70 item at that point the store is out $100 cash

Now the same guy that stole that $100 came back and bought the item. So now before giving the guy change the store has $100 cash in the drawer and the guy has the $70 item in his hands. Once the guy is given his change of $30 the store is left with $70 bucks and no items.

Store started with $100 cash
$70 item

is left with $70 bucks and no items. So the store is out $30 + cost of the item. The only way the store would be out $100 is if the item was sold AT cost with no markup.

Holy fuk the autism. THE STORE HAS $100 IN THE REGISTER + $70 IN GOODS THAT MEANS IF A NON THIEF WALKS IN TO THE STORE AND BUYS THOSE GOODS THE STORE ENDS UP WITH $170 DOLLARS AT THE END OF THEY DAY. CORRECT? REMEMBER THAT NUMBER.

IF SOMEONE STEALS SAID $100 FROM THE REGISTER, 100 - 100, THE STORE NOW HAS $0 IN THE REGISTER AND $70 IN GOODS LEFT. IF THE THIEF COMES BACK AND USES THE STOLEN $100 TO BUY $70 WORTH OF GOODS THERE IS NOW $70 IN THE REGISTER, BUT -$70 IN GOODS BECAUSE THAT $70 IN THE REGISTER AREN'T PROFITS FROM SELLING $70 WORTH OF GOODS BUT THE $70 FROM THE ORIGINAL STOLEN $100 THAT WAS IN THE REGISTER BEFORE SO HE ESSENTIALLY GIVES THE STORE BACK THEIR $70 TO RECEIVE $70 WORTH OF GOODS FOR FREE. NOW $70 IN THE REGISTER MINUS THE $70 OF GOODS THAT THE STORE NO LONGER HAS IS 0, THE STORE ENDS UP WITH TOTAL $0 AT THE END OF THE DAY INSTEAD OF $170. MEANING THEY LOST $170.

That's what I think but on paper the store would only appear to be out $100 cash based on end of day cash balancing. All transactions are paid for but cash drawer is off $100.00
