Bad enough in society where physical correction that leaves a mark is illegal.

When you believe in witchcraft and demonic possession it means you can demonise people, children. It means you can divorce yourself from empathy and human decency and treat a human being as an object

Lets move away from physical correction think we are heading into race/culture differnce. Isn't human decency subjective?

My father is an atheist. Raising us he made it no secret, but made it clear we had the freedom to study as we choose especially as we got older.

When 9/11 took place I had never been religious at all, but it made me fear death for the first time in my life so I choose to take comfort in the holy book, then study the other religions a bit, although not as much as Christianity because that was more prevelant in US. Statistics show churches PILED up within the few weeks following September 11, 2001. Everyone wanted to be right with God and I too did in case he existed.

My father told me then, "If that makes you feel better then don't let anyone stop you. Just don't get on me about it."

Father read the Bible front to back. He doesn't care if I, or my sibs do want to follow any religion, he does however take issue with church, thinks it's filled with hypocrites that can rub off on me, but that that's all on me not him.

I just got soooo shook after 9/11 I bought into the lies then think terrorists were going to blow us up or wtfever lol, and I then turned to religion/God. My father told me I was gripped with fear, and was glad I found something to believe in despite being raised by him, and atheist, and I asked him I said something like, (paraphrasing cause I forget the exact conversation) "I may die and nothing happens at all, but what if you die and you come to learn that God is real?" But he's so firm and set in his beliefs that he 100% did not believe that the latter was possible. I asked him, "Just humor me FFS!!!" He still didn't give an answer. He could not, because he's so convinced that God is not possible. Like AT LEAST KEEP AN AGNOSTIC VIEWPOINT FFS instead of just going, "LOL not gonna happen" or whatever. One day years later he did give a better answer and said, 'I would thank him for the life he gave me, but express my disappointment for never providing proof of his existence".

Mom never had a strong opinion one way or another growing up, so let my dad keep his opinion, and also wanted us to form our own.

A big problem with Pascal's wager is," What if you believe in the wrong God?".

There is also no such thing as believing just in case. You either believe, or you do not. Your father couldn't be "scared" into believing just in case because that's not what faith is.

This has always been one of my critiques of atheism - a particular atheist will apply their own values, judgment, and expectations on how a God should conduct himself (ex: if God is so great why are there kids starving in the world = I would save those kids). In your statement - we'd even be attributing the concept oftime investment and/or effort, despite the fact we know the Christian God is eternal and created time, thus transcends it. A God should and would perform as they desire, when they desire.

My goal has always been to establish the bounds of a religion and then critique it by that standard, rather than building a straw man or attackign modern, Christian-derived sentimentalism. Classic example of Christian-derived sentimentalism: the notion of we can "look down" at our loved ones from Heaven. This is something George Carlin made fun of in his standups (RIP). However based on what I've read, I've never seen of anyone besides saints and ethereal beings having anything that resembles this capacity.

Trust me not trying to be overly defensive here. I'm not religious and theists are quite adept at moving the goal post themselves. I just like to avoid shallow arguments or outright mockery that contribute nothing. Like this tool:

The bold is just your opinion and nothing more. It's equivalent to me stating most atheists are depressed neckbeards.

Morality is completely subjective. Humans do not possess an "intrinsic" set of morals that's somehow encoded into our DNA. We all have our own morals or are taught/have learned some form of generally accepted morality. The moral cornerstone of Western civilization is Christianity.

It is absolutely laughable you compared the Crusades to the monstrous atrocities committed at the hands of Atheist regimes. The Crusades overhundreds of yearsculminated in the deaths of maybe 3 million people. The Khmer Rouge surpassed that in 4 years.

Atheism is the subversion of Western society. It is the root of society's degradation, decay and degeneracy. Not to mention it is inherently absurd to believe our universe was created from nothing by nothing but I won't even get into how flawed and idiotic a belief system it is.

Actually I’d posit that religious intransigence and intolerance is the root of more evil

Did I compare the crusades or did I merely list atrocity after drawn out atrocity based on religious fervour and the opinion that only my God is the true God ...still continuing today

I know. That would be halfassing your beliefs. You must have faith, and not doubt God's existence whatsoever. I was 21 at the time, I was trying to just begin my journey. I had SO MUCH to learn because I had never done Bible study before, I had never gone to church, it wasn't something my parents were concerned about putting me and my siblings in at all.

I was like, a babe in Christ I guess it was called then? I had the ambition but not the knowledge and I like many immediately following 9/11 fell into one of the two categories: "End is coming, must have sex. And End is coming, must get right with God." The church attendances did rise rapidly and so many didn't want to die virgins or something which Fox News actually did a piece on during late September 2001.

truly the 9/11 attack was the first thing to made me come to God in anyway, and I did, very sincerely and intensely. It made me question a lot of things, and change a lot of ways...but didn't last.

But in short...Pascal's Wager was an argument someone NEW to the christian fold would have used. Was 21 too, and had never opened a bible until then. Ugh

Edit: I mean what you're saying is true. I did not know this back then And that was how I thought of the whole thing then. I brought it up though here and there for awhile after...cause I am a slow learning

there were moral codes before jesus. before jesus people were getting together and saying "lets not kill eachother". tribal groups who have never ever been exposed to jesus have ethical codes.

so that kind of destroys ur statement that morality is subjective (it clearly aint)

You may posit all you like, Christianity is and has always been the cornerstone of Western morality, which is the same morality you believe is "intrinsic" to you. Western civilization molded your morality through it's backbone - Christianity.

Atheism is and always has been instrumental in the most horrific atrocities mankind has ever witnessed. Your entire list of events, spanning over a thousand years, some of which are not even related to religion at all... pale in comparison to the inhumanity wrought by the Soviet Union alone, in this century.

People would do well to learn outside our curriculum, otherwise we'd only know about the Crusades, the Spanish Conquest, and the Holocaust.

However I think it's possible to have a large atheist population and a sound moral structure. While there's many recent negative cultural shifts in the US, the fact is we have a sound moral structure. Could probably cite Norway as well. Regardless, religion (i.e. a moral rule set) is one cog in the machine that drives this change and sets the standard, albeit a very influential one especially in the inception of a nation.

Religion has certainly been used as a tool to sway the masses, but there are other tools: nationalism, money, resources, politics or even petty squabble. IMO those are far more relevant than religion. Sure Christian Cardinals promised salvation in exchange for Christian lives, but Hitler didn't share that level of association with his church, which he manipulated for an ulterior motive.

I made no claim that Jesus brought about morality. That in no way disproves that morality is subjective. Humans do not possess a universal morality, that much is illustrated by our actions or things like rape, murder and theft would not exist. You and I do not even share the same morals. How could you possibly share an objective morality with the entire world?

Humans escaped from the barbarism of our past because of mutual benefit, not because of morality. There was no morality involved in our primitive ancestors agreeing to stop slaughtering each other. They simply sought the mutual benefit as a means of survival.

And I would argue that from those mutual benefits the morals that we know today have evolved.

Ok, though that's probably an equally naive frame. But I'm not religious, if I were Imightbe content with acquiescing all causality and worldly understanding to the actions of a god. I think it's worth critiquing based on the actual standards set by the bible, though.

Humans escaped from the barbarism of our past because of mutual benefit, not because of morality. There was no morality involved in our primitive ancestors agreeing to stop slaughtering each other. They simply sought the mutual benefit as a means of survival.
man u talk a lot about morality bean subjective with a limited grasp of wat your are actually saying.

furthermore your lack of knowledge of ethical societies which predate christianity (greeks, pre-empire rome, ethics within celtic societies vis a vis ceaser earlier discussions with the vergobrets) is super dooper lacking.

furthermore you can go right now to the amazon jungle and talk to some bros who never seen a white guy who know not to kill one another.

id invite you to read up on on the boring ass debate about whether or not morality is real, subjective watever.

know that you are talkin out of your ass though. i am too, but slightly less so.

also im realizing your position is weird. "morality is subjective! luckily we have jesus"

most religious people say "morality is objective and jesus IS that objective morality"

You are a product of Western society which would not exist without Christianity. Again, gratitude is in order. Without the sacrifice of Christian warriors you would either be brutally repressed in an Islamic society or brutally repressed in an Atheist society.

The Holocaust, which was very clearly based on racism. I thought that was common knowledge. Hitler did not allow Jews to change or abandon their religion in exchange for freedom. Being Christian did not exempt anyone from being put to death.

And the native American genocide, which again, was very clearly racial. You may "posit" that it could possibly be deemed cultural, but to claim it is religious is mendacious.

I'm not just throwing my hands in the air, just asking where to start. You talked of transcending time but how do I even try to understand that. I dont really understand what time is. Is it a flat line,a circle or is it happening all at once. I dont know so how would I understand something above it.

Ancient civilizations were good at having their own moral guidelines (many of which mirror our own) before the bible was even conceived. I don't know why people think Christianity has a monopoly on "good".

Not like it didn’t absorb a host of pagan festivals in order to more easily convert indigineous people
