Went to a Cypress Hill show a few weeks back. Felt good to be out at a concert. Here's a little snippet of the show.







On another note, been watching a series called 'so wassup' by DJ Premier.
Gives some pretty cool insights to the making of some of the songs he produced.

So Drake is dropping a new album at midnight, but I wanted to take time to shine some light on a lesser known emcee who I personally believe is the best to ever come out of Toronto: Mathematik.

He was a conscious oriented lyricist who spit over some incredibly dope jazzy boom bap beats. His 1999 LP ‘Ecology’ is a phenomenal underground project.

I’d probably describe his style as a little Masta Ace mixed with Talib Kweli and a sprinkle of Illmatic Nas. But he definitely had his own flair. Highly talented and it’s a shame he never broke through.

It's hard to know why so many of the underground dudes never broke through.

If I had to guess - it's because he was 'generic', and labels were looking for stars. Its crazy to think this level of skill used to be the norm. The underground today is probably flooded with mumbling drug addicts.

This level of competition used to be everywhere, thats what made the golden age so great.

I just gave Ecology a listen.

Dude definatly had skills and potential. The album didn't feel finished, the quality ranged so much. I think 'Industrialized' could've been an underground classic, but that beat..

One of my favourite tracks was 'My enemy'. That beat reminds me of something, and I can't place it.

Overall I give it 7/10. When you compare it to Sic Sense or Citizen Kane (who both made appearances) I can't help but wonder why it isnt more coherent. It was an hour long, cutting it down to 45 min would probably help.

I’ve been going down the YouTube rabbit hole lately and found some great throwback clips from Yo! MTV Raps. Being too young to have consumed the 90s era first hand so most of this was new to me. I got most of my hip hop knowledge from online self education and lucky enough to have friends who knew dope hip hop. I wish I got to experience the golden era though. So much classic music, so many legends right at the forefront of the culture. These days you really have to dig or be put onto modern lyricists.
