Ebony with the transparent burst quilted maple looks great . We were discussing 80s stuff — for me Jackson is the most 80s of all those brands. Even Jeff Beck briefly played one back then.

When he played on Petrucci's solo album I knew it was only a matter of time. Technique wise Mangini is on another level (saw him live twice with Vai) so live I'd imagine they'll skip over the songs recorded with him.

The real test of the relationship will be in the studio. It's like a relationship where one person was in charge and after they split up the other person learned to make decisions without them, and now they're back together. If the new material is great then maybe they'll be happy for him to do his thing.

Yeah, I'd imagine there were some provisions put in place where creative direction is concerned.

As for canning him, the only way they can come off as not being world-class douchebags is if they said, "Hey, we're doing one more record and a tour for our 40th and then we're hanging it up. We're going to do that with Portnoy. Here's a sack of cash."

However they did it, hopefully they did it face-to-face and weren't pussies and had management make the call. The way they handled the auditions, from the bit of footage I saw, it seems like they handle shiit old school, so that's good.

Mangini is a class act, though. Basically, "Oh, yeah, I knew from day one until today, 13 years later, that this was just a sub gig."

I'm guessing dude was not the Jason Newsted of Dream Theater, so to be tossed after 13 years for some feels. I mean, it's not as bad as tossing someone so your kid can play bass… I suppose if they pulled him aside from the outset and told him "You're just in this until Labrie and Portnoy kiss and make up - that could be 2 months or 20 years."

I say let's just be grateful Dream Theatre are still in it after 40 odd years. <3 Dream Theatre. It's no mean feat to pump out quality music of this complexity and musicianship for four decades.

For someone who loves Dream Theater, it's kind of surprising that you don't know how to spell the band name. Sorry, breh, had to do it, lol.

I might sound passionate about the firing, but I haven't listened to Dream Theater much after Awake. Not really a fan of 7-string dick thumping (even though I played 7-string exclusively for a good decade or so, but no dick thumping stuff), but yeah, good on them for being at it so long. Hopefully they'll bag it when they're no longer up to the task rather than charging for people to listen to their music tuned down and to a slower click track.

It's the autocorrect on my laptop. 100% srs.

I'm hoping Portnoy can reignite the group. IMO everything up to Octavarium was great but afterwards they sounded like they were intentionally trying to make things complex and good riffing and just attempting to write a cool song sort of went onto the backburner.

Portnoy always listens to new music, does he not? So he should be back with some new influences.

Howdy roller….

I checked out one of the YT videos.
I've never heard of Vola guitars so I can't comment on all the YT endorsements they seem to be garnering.
Nor could I compare the to the competition or whether their price points are that appealing.
I'm just Tele guy anyway.

Carry on.

It's just the suspicious nature of Vola guitars all of a sudden being reviewed by all the top youtube guitar reviewers at the same time, giving the guitars glowing reviews. It's all too transparent and it annoys me. I dislike obviously paid shills.

Made in Indonesia. A minor detail but those knobs would look cheap on an overdrive pedal let alone an $1800 amp. I've heard a lot of ordinary sounding demos with great gear — and conversely highly polished demos of ordinary gear using IRs and slick post production — so it's one of those things I'd have to actually play through to have an opinion on it. He said the crunch channel took 5 years of development because he wanted it to be in the ballpark of his Dumble.

I agree with you about appreciating a simple amp.

Ahhh … usually their higher wattage amps are "Assembled in USA" so if this one is made in Indonesia then maybe it's even a kinda overpriced? I had the original, Assembled in USA Archon 50. It was ok…

Fellas, what are your reasons for still using tube amps in this day and age, rather than going digital?

Personally, I still can't decide between either. I think tube amps are still GOAT when it comes to tone and feel, but they sound their best when cranked to the max, are heavy, delicate etc. Plus you need to place your mics right, it will be fickle and sound good certain days, less so other days etc.

Axe-Fx, though, I've heard replicate to like 99% of the way there without any hassles of a physical tube amp. Just consistently works every day and delivers bang on tones. Plus the amount of tweakability and features dwarf the tube amp by a country mile.

Like, let's say you're playing a particular head but you want to play it through Mesa cabs. You can switch at the touch of a button with digital. The amount of control you've got over your signal chain is amazing.
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

I've yet to hear a digital device that feels and sounds like a good tube amp. Monitors, cabs, IR … doesn't matter. A tube amp has a directness that is just not there with anything else. I also have a Boss TAE for control. Reverb, delay, compressor, boost, eq etc all midi controlled. It can also control the amp channels.
