UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCESshould anyone suggest anything regarding law in the UK unless they are a practicing attorney in Britain or the greater United Kingdom area. Legal research and the like is best left to them. Especially Miscers that don't have a law degree or aren't even in law school (myself included).

Dave, only thing I can advise you is to be extremely careful where you go from here. The damage has been wrought, and it sounds like the fianc is awared; personally, I'd leave it at that. But because I don't study law in UK, I can't tell you what you can and cannot be held liable for; either civilly or criminally.
