It seems to be a rule that the tat you get is actually the opposite of the type of person you really are. Tats are gotten based on anxiety. So, you're trying to advertise something about yourself that isn't true. You do not need to advertise things that are true.
For instance, a tall guy will likely never get a tat saying "I'm tall" because he knows it and so does everyone else.
So, signs of depression tats: Cheerful designs and cute things. You're trying to say "I'm happy" but if you were you wouldn't need to sell it like that.
Tough guys tats: They say that you're a coward or have lots of anxiety about being manly, and so on.
People who are actually tough are actually tough and don't think about it. People who know them know they're tough and so no tat is needed. Also, a truly mean person wouldn't want anyone knowing they are and wouldn't want to give it away.

I also just downloaded a common Psychology 101 book and the word tattoo doesn't even appear in it. It's funny how this is supposedly common knowledge.

Anyway, it depends on what he thinks of Pandas. Typically, I see them as cute. So, cute tats tend to indicate the person isn't feeling very cute/happy and is depressed. Once again, if you're genuinely happy, you're feeling it, may be unaware of it, and most people can see it. So, putting a mark on yourself that says "I'm cute" is false advertising. It's like a box of food that says "I'm very healthy!" and is something to be suspicious of because no one writes that on the side of an apple.
Alternately, let's say he's Chinese American, and got the Panda tat. That might indicate that he doesn't really respect Chinese culture much but is trying to show "pride" in it. I know tons of completely trashy Irish American who have "Irish" tats all over themselves, and if they're an example of being Irish, then holy sh!t, no thanks. They do not have pride is being Irish, they don't have pride in anything.
Even if that's not right, why a f@cking Panda?! What makes this guy want to walk through the rest of his life with a rapidly degrading pic of a panda on him? It is a very good question and has an answer.
Sadly, the answer may be very very dumb, and that speaks to the guy's character.

LMAO at you guys arguing with Adlerian. You'd have a more challenging debate with a 90 year old dealing with advanced dementia.

Your arrogance is amazing, though, I'd never tell someone that something you learn in a Calc 1 course is common knowledge, and that I won't provide them with sources. But I guess that's the difference with psychology, in an actual science course you learn that every claim that you make should be supported by evidence, and here your only "evidence" is what's supposedly in your head. An argument from authority is always a logical fallacy, but here you're resorting to it without even establishing your authority.

I agree OP, however I had a scalp tattoo that eventually wore off because I was in the sun too much. It blotched it and my head was solid glossy black for about 2 years until I had to bleach it white again to match my skin tone. Still is a bit off but hey it's close enough.

I have a friend that did Psychology for his undergrad and asked him: "Did you learn anything about why people get tattoos and how that says anything about their personality and/or issues in your undergrad?" The answer was: "Hmm, no I didn't learn anything like that."
So much for your "common knowledge" and "oh, you learn this in Psychology 101". You never learn it, because it's not true.
