It's either $100 or $30 + COGS

There is no way you can lose $170 by someone stealing $100

by your example if we convert everything in the store to cash (assuming the $70 item cost the store $70 lets say it's a closeout sale at cost)

So the total value in the store is $170

Thief steals $100 at that point the store still has $70 so they're out $100

Thief comes back gives the guy $100 and the store gives him $70 item and $30 leaving the store with $70 cash when all is said at done $170 - 70 = 100 store is out $100

If you try to keep track of the money every inch of the story you're gonna have a bad time. At the end of the day if the cashier does stock-taking and tries to match it with the amount of cash in the register he is going to notice a shortage of exactly $100 that was initially stolen. So total money lost is $100

Ultimately he has $30 less in cash than he started with and he's also out the COGS of the item that was bought.

After consulting the mastermind who runs the local 711 about this excruciatingly difficult scenario he came up with an answer. After 2 hours of serious number crunching and calculations Akmehd says, if that is all that took place during that day he will be short:

$70 of inventory and $30 cash.

I'm glad that I'm just a simpleton who isn't faced with these grueling scenarios on a daily basis. The people that can figure this stuff out are certainly worthy of the big-bucks.
