43 With Musket and Tomahawk Volume 1 - The Saratoga Campaign and The Wilderness War of 1777 by Michael Logusz
44 The Last Voyage of Columbus by Martin Dugard
With Musket and Tomahawk Vol 1 was good but not great and at times a bit repetitive. I also have Vol 2 in the series yet to read. The Last Voyage of Columbus was absolutely fascinating. I was somewhat familiar with his earlier voyages but this 4th voyage was an extraordinary string of events. I cannot imagine what those people endured.

I just finished Stephen King's novella, The Body, which is what the 80's movie Stand By Me was based on. The movie follows the book VERY CLOSELY. I was only enjoying it so-so until the end, but I think that's because I've been too busy to get through it quickly and with continuity, but when I finished the end of it I concluded that it was great and definitely worth re-reading next year!

#59 Done, One Door Away From Heaven by Dean Koontz
completely different read than the first book of his that I read (Shadowfires).
I really enjoyed this one. Slow burn, very character driven, incredible descriptions. If I didn't know any better, i'd say it was written by someone different than Shadowfires. I thought one part of the ending was corny as all fuk, but it didn't take away from the book at all.
Should have no problem knocking out #60 by year's end!

One door away from heaven was much different. Very slow, barely any action until the second to last chapter, but I got hooked on the characters and their backgrounds early.
I just started another of his books called Intensity. Only 100 pages in so far, but it's intense (see what I did there?) definitely a page turner

I just finished Ready Player One again. I thought it was a bit slow in the middle, but the first and last thirds are incredible . . . especially if you grew up in the 70's and 80's like I did.

So, i finished 100 books yesterday. Didn't really have a target this year but i'm pretty happy with 100, was not as difficult as i thought it'd be.
Anyway, since last time..
Finished:
Robin Waterfield - Creators, Conquerors, and Citizens: A History of Ancient Greece - 4.5/5 - A pretty good overarching history of ancient Greece. Has to be short in areas given it covers all of Greece up to the Roman conquest in ~550 pages, but well weaved together nonetheless.
Carl Jung - Aion - 5/5 - Pretty amazing book, very hard to explain, but delves into the history of christianity and the psychological symbolism of Jesus associated with Jesus as the self, tracing through various motifs in religion/mythyology/alchemy etc.
Phillip Matyszak - The sons of Caesar - 4/5 - This was a pretty good, and very readable account of the Julii-Claudian emperors, as well as some background information regarding the political paradigm of the time and what not.
Dando-Collins, Stephen - Seven Against Thebes: The Quest of the Original Magnificent Seven - 4/5 - A retelling of the Oedipus cycle and seven against Thebes by a classicist. Enjoyed this much more than i thought i would.
Tacitus - The Annals of Imperial Rome - 4/5 - This mainly covered the reign of Tiberius and Nero, unfortunately the reign of Caligula is lost, and half of Claudius reign is lost. I do like Tacitus writing style, he reminds me of Thucydides
Sean Carroll - The biggest ideas in the universe (space, time and motion) - 3/5 - This was good for some memory jogging, and went through the equations, math and applications of general relativity. I only gave it 3 because i'm not really sure who the books targeted at. It wont be useful enough for those who don't know general relativity, as that requires actually practising the math, and this is more like a book explaining the equations. People who've spent time working with GR will find it lacking.. but it was good to remind me of some finer details that have escaped my memory regarding the stress-energy tensor.

#60: Intensity by Dean Koontz. Lived up to it's title, this book was a page turner big time. Very enjoyable.
#61: The last Season by Eric Bhelm
Non fiction about a long time park ranger in the High Sierra's that goes missing. His life was in turmoil, so they question accident vs suicide. It was a fantastic book, and it really hit home with me. I've definitely been in my share of rough terrain, bad / winter weather on some of my mountaineering adventures so I fully understand the near impossible task of finding a missing person. Also his mental state struck a chord: I was going through something similar when I discovered the mountains and the power they have.
Great book, I highly recommend.

Recent Read.
1)experiencing God. waiting on God's timing is the hardest thing. But a lot of times we show our faith by following God's timing.
2)The magic of thinking book. It's average. Same as most self help book. Look good. Be kind. Be self drives, read constantly.
3)How I raise myself from failing to successful selling. Author is insurance agent. He makes a lot of calls to make a successful career. It's average.
4) outlive written by a doctor. Highly recommend. It talks about how to adjust sleep, diet. It talks about different exercise and also mental health.
5)yoga on the go, very practical.
6)making add work. Average. Talk about people who gave add
7) the 60 second leader. Average
8) excellence inspiring for achieving your personal best. A bunch of quotes. Average
9) A chinese book, translating in english emotional can be low, dream has to be high. Really good book. Life changer for me. Being lonely is normal. Gathering is short. Cherish the current companion. Forget the person that does not love you back. Grass is always green on the other side. Don't compare yourself to others as you don't see their pain. Don't stay at home all the time.

Finished:
Dr Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones - Persians: The age of great Kings (in progress) - 4.5/5 - This was overall a great book, and i wanted to give it 5*, but he made a basic historical error (claimed Demetrius the besieger was Alexanders satrap of Phrygia, when it was his father Antigonus, Demetrius was a toddler at the time), and also a preachy final chapter decreeing the Roman empire and it's influence on the West, in favour of bumming the Persian empire. I get he's passionate about it, and this book was really detailed and showed some historical narratives from a Persian rather than Greek perspective, but i feel he's gone too far in the other direction.
Michael Grant - Nero - 4.5/5- This was an absolutely wonderful biography of Nero, that is much more balanced than the slander Nero usually gets. Was he a perfect emperor? Absolutely not, but the tales of his depravity are massively over-exaggerated and he mostly had people killed when he was scared. It's hard to imagine coming to the throne of the Roman empire at 16 years old. He was certainly no Caligula who genuinely took a kind of sordid pleasure from inflicting pain on others, and he actually frequently complained early in his career about being made to sign death warrants by the senate. I think his terrible reputation comes from the fact that he wanted to be an actor/poet in the Greek style which was abhorrent to the Senate (who wrote the histories), and he also attacked the institution of the Senate. The second factor is probably he was one of the first people to persecute Christians (for the great fire of Rome, although there is a good case that it may have been justified somewhat, as they may have played a part), and again Christians have controlled a large part of the historical narrative. Empire wise, he was loved in the East and Greece, quite liked by the people, and he brought stability in some parts of the empire. For example, his Armenian settlement of Tiridates with Parthia (thanks to Corbulo), and his suppression of Boudicas revolt in Britain under Seutonius Paulinus. One could credit his generals for these victories, but ultimately Nero made the final decisions, and if he's going to be blamed for everything that occured in his regime, he also needs to be credited with the positives.

Paul Cartledge - Spartans: An epic history- I've read a number of Paul Cartledge books, and he is frequently seen by peers as the worlds leading expert on Sparta, so it should be interesting.
Robert Harris - Imperium (Cicero #1) - I'm already enjoying this, it's a piece of historical fiction about Ciceros early years, written through the eyes of his slave Tiro. It really brings the era to life.

Just finished Michael Connelly's Chasing The Dime. It's a standalone novel separate from his Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller series and reads a bit like a Blake Crouch novel which is something that you wouldn't expect from a detective/lawyer guy. Great book!!!

I don't think I'll hit 52 but being as this is the first time I've ever tracked my reading for a year I'm pleased overall and read some amazing books. There just isn't enough time in the day to read them all.
Updated to add #48. Really enjoyed Sigurd Olson's writing but wished I had a map or something to follow along with a little better. Google Maps is ok but in more remote areas it gets difficult to see detail.

fun read, little lighter than Intensity. i guess this is the first book of a trilogy but he has yet to finish the 3rd book. I'll get the second at some point and read it.

Fantastic read, this is going to be great tool for organization and productivity. The author had ADD back before it was really diagnosed or known about and he developed this style journal on his own to keep his sh!t straight. I've been doing a mini one since I finished the book, but I'll be starting a full fledged one with the new year.
#63: Velocity by Dean Koontz
Great read! Loved it, and it was definitely a page turner. Throughout the read, I thought it was as good or better than Intensity, although after finishing it, I'm gonna give the edge to Intensity. When the climax hit in this book, it was over in done with so fast. It's not that it was bad, I liked the ending, it just felt like there was a ton of buildup, then blink and it's done.

Paul Cartledge - Spartans: An epic history - 4/5 - This was good, Paul Cartledge is truly an expert on Sparta, however the book wasn't as detailed as i would expect, being about 250 pages in total (covering all of Spartan history...)
Robert Harris - Imperium (Cicero #1)- 5/5 - I loved this. Ciceros life as told through the eyes of his slave, Tiro. Everything in it is factually true, and it really brings the era of Rome to life, could not recommend it enough. I've bought all 3 in the series after the first one.
Carlo Rovelli - White holes- 4/5 - Pretty good, but fairly short. Carlo Rovelli takes us through a black hole, and out of a theoretical white hole (at least, using his own math of GR combined with loop quantum gravity). Carlo Rovellis central claim is that a black hole, after many billions of years can turn into a (very small) white hole and eject its information (very, very slowly) solving the 'information paradox'. His central claim is essentially that when a black hole has nearly decayed, and quantum effect become important, the black hole can quantum tunnel to a white hole, where the information is spewed out. This doesn't happen until the black hole has already hawking radiated most of its mass and is very small, and so the white hole itself is very small, and emits its information very, very slowly (the white hole would, in rovellis view last much longer than the black hole because it emits radiation so weakly). Due to the relativity of time, this is compatible with what we see, because a very short time beyond the event horizon of a black hole, will be hundreds of millions/billions of years for someone outside the event horizon, and a black hole and white hole look the same to an external observer, the difference can only be seen from inside the horizon. So from carlo rovellis perspective, combining the maths of General relativity and loop quantum gravity, if you enter the event horizon of a black hole, you will in a few minutes essentially end up being ejected from a white hole, billions of years in the future.

I've relaxed in December since hitting 100 so i'm not too fussed, but overall it's certainly been a good year reading for me. Hope everyone else has had a good year and been happy with their reading accomplishments. Looks like we'll need a new thread soon.

Finished one more under the gun yesterday: A Simple Plan by Scott Smith bringing me to 65 for the year.
Great book, 3 guys find a wrecked plane with millions in cash and how quickly everything goes wrong with mistrust.
I’m stoked that I completed 52 with ease. even if I don’t do it again in 2024, reading is definitely a part of my daily routine again. I’ve got a bunch of longer books on my list, and I doubt I’ll be knocking out 1000 pagers in a week

All of Abercrombies stuff was fantastic, Best Served Cold was probably the top one for fantasy
Between Two fires and Those Across the River by Buelhman were excellent horrors

Robert Bennet Jackson Trilogy, The Founders Trilogy
A psychic thief girl who gets herself in a mess of trouble with very powerful entities and beings. She develops her abilities further in the book. But reading this book gave me psychic ESP vision in my imagination. I pictured being in a two story house and seeing lights illuminate through the ceiling where the characters are. It was really cool to visualize this book.
I have to say the difference between all three books is scaling of shear power. Power is control. Control of everything even erasing things out of existence. The books do a good job to give you a scale of what power really is. Its top notch.
I have to say, I'm re-reading this series right now, and I'm picking up on so many clever foreshadowing the author made for the story. It seems like all 3 books were planned together at once. Because the story is very fluid in transitioning of story. It's a thrilling series with a lot of cool fight sequences that are cleverly written. I highly recommend this series.
