Still amazes me that we got Soto, and the headliner of the deal was a guy with 9 starts last season, coming off a broken elbow and some "prospects". Maybe Thorpe ends up being a stud, but more than likely he's James Kaprelian.

Great deal, especially if we keep Soto long term.

Yeah I wish he would just f*cking sign too. Like everyone knows you're going to the Dodgers dude.

Whatever they pay him is going to be paying way too much for one player though. I have my doubts he'll be an effective 2-way player for much longer. He's already not pitching next year. Then I can see him maybe pitching his age 30 and 31 seasons before tapering off with that being a good idea.

He's going to end up being a massively overpaid DH for 9 or 10 of the 12 year deal the Dodgers probably give him.

LMAO at this endless string of minor league signings/tradings with a few subpar bullpen arms mixed in. Happy they traded for Kelenic still but I swear this team makes moves just to make themselves feel like they accomplished something over winter while not actually doing jack sh*t.

For comparison the Dodgers have signed and traded for a grand total of 3 people to this point. The Yankees have doubled that with 6 players, but 3 of those players were Juan Soto, Trent Grisham, and Alex Verdugo. Ya know actual f*cking players.

Dodgers going to make hundreds of millions off Ohtani. Asian fanbase, sold out stadiums everywhere, tourists, tv deals, merch. 70m a year is cheap af for what they are getting with him. Remember how everyone went crazy over Ichiro, this is 2-3x that.

yup. from pure money in money out perspective this is cheap... as long as he stays good for at least a few more years.

it'll hurt their ability to win at some point though because they'll be up against the cap and he won't be producing 10 WAR every year

The economic impact he had on the US economy in 2022 was something like $150 million from ticket sales and merchandise

Keep in mind ticket sales was for both home and away games in this estimate, the away earnings being something Dodgers would not be getting. And a heavy percentage of merchandise sales (like 85-90%) goes to the manufacturer (Majestic and New Era for example), not to the team. Plus you factor in revenue sharing that’s required to take another piece of that away from the Dodgers.

I’m not bothering calculating out what the Dodgers will or won’t make off him cause I don’t care enough, but I think you’re overestimating how much they’ll make by calling this a cheap deal.

I think it’d be generous to say they clear $100 mil off him while paying him $70 mil though.
