We were discussing setups recently. Might as well hear about it from a guy who builds guitars for a living. Over to you Mr. Suhr...

The sound of those Kemper profile videos really drives home how great profiling/modeling is.

A kid starting out today would have it made. A lot of used guitars for a couple hundred bucks are great after a setup and maybe a pickup upgrade and then a plugin from Neural DSP, etc. will give you pristine album quality tones. Sure beats a solid state practice amp with no reverb trying to play along to that music.

I started out on a Peavey Rage which was absolute dogsh*t. Upgraded to a 160W Peavey which was insanely loud but had the same dogsh*t distortion. Somehow saved up $400 to buy a Sansamp which improved the tone but that was after years of torturing my ears and still miles from what I play through today.

Can anyone tell me if one of these multi guitar racks can hold unusual body shapes? I'm getting enough guitars that individual stands is getting a bit cluttered, but the explorer doesn't fit in a normal stand.

Good to see you....We were both on the Harmony Central Forums when Doug was putting out the word, couldn't pass down a great deal. Put Scumbacks in there and it's huge sounding (which is why I have an Axe III now, because even the MT 15 is too much for condo life)

FFLPs just dropped. Just pulled the trigger on my first Firefly, they're apparently killer guitars for the money.

As a result they don't usually stay in stock more than a day or two - if you want in move quick.

I've been gassing for one of these recently...

They're getting a lot of love for being $200 guitars that play like a mid-range ($500-600) guitar. I don't have an LP type guitars and I'm assuming this one will need a few adjustments to get it set up right, which is a good way for me to learn.

The low end gear has come along so massively from when I was a kid starting out. What a time to be a beginner, you could get this and a Katana for $400. Apparently the stuff Squire is putting out now is incredible value too.

I'm not in the market for a semi hollow but Firefly just dropped these spalted 338s for $180. All gone already.

I'm intimidated at the thought of graduating to a high-end guitar. I'd love a Gibson SG but I've demoed very few and really don't know much about the different eras, versions, etc. I really like vintage and boutique amps though. I have a couple Sovtek Mig60s, a Sunn Sorado, a Matamp on the way. One day maybe I'll have a "guitar to match" but really the Epiphone G-400 I bought 10 years ago is still my main guitar.

On the topic of amps, would love to see some more of all your rigs here!

Hybrid picking for me at first.

I love country lead guitar and hybrid picking is a must for that.

I can hardly even keep time playing super easy songs now. Just restringed an old G that was found in a dumpster many years ago last week. I was lucky to remember half of a song but now that im back to work and free of my addiction demons i hope to have me a new tele before long to start putting some time in again

What blows me away is Petrucci recorded all the guitars to a click and Portnoy came in and laid down the drum parts in a way that sounds like they tracked it live.

I've seen Mike Mangini live and he's a great drummer but Portnoy + Petrucci = Dream Theater. It doesn't matter what elements change around them that's the core sound which is obvious listening to these recordings.





These two making music together again is the highlight of 2020. Maybe if DT was touring as planned his solo album would have been put on the backburner.

I get the Paul Gilbert vibe big time when I hear a piece like that, especially the string skipping.I am loving the songs coming out and yes you can just tell it's MP. They truly do have such a musical chemistry, and to this day the two LTE albums are some of the best albums ever made.

I'm no JP nuthugger but holy fuk are his new songs insane.. Was listening to them yesterday night and it lit a fire up under my ass to go compose and practice.. I needed some of that old school instrumental prog back... So sick of the modern chit, was fun at first but got so boring and repetitive..

Mangini is off the charts with technique, but people who play together for years have an unmistakeable timing they develop (I.e. Alex and Eddie, Bissionette brothers)

For entry level probably not however I'd make sure whatever you buy has stereo monitoring so if you decide one day you want to run stereo effects into it e.g. stereo delay after an IR loader or reactive load you'll be able to hear it in stereo while you play. The 3rd gen 2i2 has a mono/stereo switch on the front. Previous models did not.Definitely. To be honest I rarely listen to DT because of the singer so I don't mind at all if these guys just do instrumentals together.

No question. 2006 = pre Youtube. I'd never seen anyone back then with that kind of ability on electric guitar at 8 years old. I just assumed at the time being Russian they were bullsh*tting about his age. That's how impressive it was.

Youtube changed the playing field of course so this past 10-15 years it's more common to have chops at a young age or at least in a heavily edited video. Simply being interested in electric guitar at that age is already uncommon. It's usually around 11-12 or even later. No one was getting those Paul Gilbert chops without one of those 80s shredders as a teacher who held the keys to unlock it all or watching one of their VHS videos and putting in at least 6 hours a day with a metronome like doing gym workouts, making slow and steady progress.

While hammering away on drills can build up ridiculous picking chops, what someone younger typically won't have is a great sense of timing or that feel for interesting phrasing. Even in a lot of advanced Youtube shredders bending and vibrato took a backseat unlike the guys they're copying who nailed the fundamentals, and it shows. From a physical standpoint it takes time to build up strength in the hands to develop great vibrato.

Cliffs: even if a kid can pick like this bending and vibrato will probably be shaky as sh*t, even with light strings. They're not going to sound like this. So there's always something to improve which is what makes it interesting. No matter how early you pick it up and how long you live you'll never master it.
