Also the majority of team revenue is generated through tv contracts. Ohtani really won’t affect this. The Dodgers already had a substantial tv contract. It has nothing to do with him and they would have had it regardless. Granted it keeps them relevant and good so they can score another big contract when this one ends, but as long as they continue winning they would get that. Yes he helps with that winning but he’s not the end all pulling in a new huge tv deal for them either
And no they can’t sign a tv deal in Japan before anyone argues the overseas impact
I suppose if anyone really wants to try to track its impact though just follow their revenue stream. It was $580 million in 2023. Keep in mind it typically trends up each year due to rising prices in the economy too. For example in 2022 it was $565 million. So they likely would have seen a natural increase without him.
But nevertheless, here you go:
https://www.forbes.com/teams/los-ang...h=2b69986323ae
Excluding the covid season their revenue seems to jump between $10-30 mil a year. If Ohtani really makes them more than they pay him we should expect to see a huge increase. So we’ll just let the numbers tell the story.
The more I look at this I don’t think they will make money off adding him. They’ll make money as a team still even with paying him but I doubt we’ll see this revenue jump $70 mil in 2024, and that would just break even.
Better yet, let's put this in even simpler terms. If his addition is such a sure net positive financially to a team then why are so many teams out on trying to sign him compared to in on trying to sign him. Wouldn't you want both the best player in baseball on your team and a net positive cash from him being on there? Doesn't make sense for so many to not vie for his services if that's true
And no they can’t sign a tv deal in Japan before anyone argues the overseas impact
Dodgers have the most lucrative regional sports network media rights deal in all of MLB. In total, it’s worth more than $8 billion. That plays a massive part in it all.
Some may wonder if the Dodgers can ink their own broadcast deal in Japan where Ohtani’s presence is massive. The Dodgers won’t be able to, which makes Ohtani’s signing a win for all the other owners in MLB.
Major League Baseball controls all international broadcast deals. The revenue garnered from them is split evenly between all 30 owners in the league.
The Dodgers 8 billion TV deal is for 25 years and has 15 years remaining for reference. Some may wonder if the Dodgers can ink their own broadcast deal in Japan where Ohtani’s presence is massive. The Dodgers won’t be able to, which makes Ohtani’s signing a win for all the other owners in MLB.

"One day I won't be able to lift any more. Not I won't want to lift. I mean physically unable. That day could be decades from now or it could be tomorrow. All I know is that's the day I'll wish I could lift more than ever. The day I'd give anything for one more workout, one more set, or one more cardio session. So go hard and enjoy every workout, every set, every rep. Because one day you will wake up and you will never get it back."

Yea he won't win a cy young. Dodgers are taking a big gamble on coming back from TJ surgery healthy. Most seem to these days, but i think it's his second.
I'm thinking they had conversations around turning him into a reliever or teaching him right field as backup options. He's athletic enough he could learn the field as a worst case scenario.
If he puts in a few more years like the last couple and they win a ring the gamble will pay off in spades

Ok now they're making money off him.
What the f*ck MLB? This is the type of contract that really should not be allowed. Now they're really only paying him $500 million after a rough estimate of inflation, plus the next 10 years they get to bank money off him and score interest off it. Even if he only draws in $30 mil of revenue by himself a year, over 10 years that's $300 mil (plus the interest compounding each year).
He'll basically be paying off his own contract in other words before he gets his money. If you didn't hate the Dodgers before you sure as sh*t should now.
F*ck.... time to rope

When they start paying him the deferred salary in 10 years, will it count against their salary at that point? As in starting in 2033 they'll have the $68 MM counting towards (or likely over) the luxury tax?
They've already set the threshold through 2026. It was $233 mil last year, 2026 will be $244 mil. Rough estimation if it continues trending similarly it will likely be $40 mil higher than it is today. Doesn't cover all of the $68 mil from a tax perspective but it does wipe away a lot of it, so the hit won't be the same as it would today.

Tyler Glasnow gonna backfire on LAD. Dude has never pitched a full season in his life.
I got Yamamoto going to either the Mets or Giants. Snell I'm not sure. It'd be nice if the Braves would get off their ass and go after him but they won't so it will be someone else is all I know.

Nah Giants will be desperate and pay him more after LAD landed Shohei. Why go play under the shadow of Shohei too? Yamamoto has more to gain going to the Giants imo. Aside from winning that is lol.

Love this for them
And if you want to trim this even further and only include organizations good enough to have at least accumulated 20 or more playoffs series they sit 13th out of 16 total teams. BRUTAL
And if you want to know their record since 2000, it's an even more abysmal 6-14 (.300)
But hey, Zere0wn says they're a smart team at least!! How comforting to have that accolade!!!

They go where the money is. Always have. If you actually think anything else persuades them to any significant degree you're in denial. They all like to talk a big game about how winning matters but at the end of the day if the f*cking Pirates offered Shohei a $900 million deal over 12 years he'd be wearing yellow instead of blue.
