2004 he was a wreck. Thankfully he got himself back in shape.

Former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar has reflected on the 2004 tour that saw him unite with the band after eight years – and it paints a sorry picture of Eddie Van Halen’s issues with addiction at the time. In a recent interview with AXS TV, Hagar even claims that his experience on 2004 Summer Tour was “the worst experience” of his life.

The reason for this, according to Hagar, is because of EVH’s drug and alcohol abuse, and the impact it had on him both emotionally and physically. “Eddie was completely whacked out off the charts on alcohol and drugs,” Hagar says. As a result, Eddie’s guitar riffing was hugely impaired; tracks would be lost in a sea of gibberish, Hagar often unable to recognise what track Eddie was even performing.

“Poor guy… he was really in bad shape,” Hagar mourns. “I thought he was going to die.”

Inebriated, Eddie was totally unrecognisable. “I’ve never met a person like that in my life,” he says. “[He tried] to bust windows out of a G5 airplane at 4,000 feet with a wine bottle… it ain’t even our plane, it’s a rental plane!”

The experience left Hagar desperate to leave midway through the tour. 40-shows deep, Hagar was ready to pull the plug. “I said, I can’t do this anymore – the guy’s going to die,” he recalls. “It was horrible. He did horrible things to people. He treated people so badly… he was a complete raving maniac.”

I think Joe will do EVH justice on this upcoming tour but it sounds off without Alex VH. He auctioned off all his gear a few weeks ago so he's retired for good.

Anyone who knows anything about this era of music will acknowledge Alex Van Halen is one of the greatest to do it. Had one of the best drum sounds and was a beast who would have gotten more attention if it wasn't for his brother.

Hey Dominik, do you use your Two Notes as a tube amp power attenuator to get tube tones at low volume?

I do.

I have a captorX. I mostly use it to go to the interface with cab sims, but sometimes use it as a typical attenuator.

It would be better if it had continuous attentuation levels, but it still works well for me with the discreet choices.

Thinking about getting that or the Fryette Power Station or the Iron King or whatever it’s called. Not sure yet which one.

I really like the captorX

Super convenient, records really well, and had some slick features ( twin tracking, dynamic IRs)

I used a pair of CAB Ms in stereo with a tube preamp – there was no load connected. Only used for power amp simulation and IRs with a speaker jack pass thru to connect a load. They make the Captor X for attenuation as JLC mentioned. The Fryette would be the better (and more $$$) option.

Spoiler!
I've often wondered if some kind of speaker isolation box with a Suhr Reactive Load would be the best option if I go back to a tube amp. I guess it comes down to where you live and if some low end rumble in another room would bother neighbors, etc. Tim Pierce has a fancy switching rig with a bunch of heads connected to an Ampete switcher and a 4x12 mic'd up in a soundproof room under his studio. His neighbors would still hear something.

I get a bit confused as to all the different types of attenuators. I'm leaning towards the Fryette.
