Otherwise i normally trade alt coin into ETH/BTC then transfer to gemini/coinbase to exchange for USD.

You really only trade to a stable coin if you're trying to keep your value tied to USD while also keeping it on one of the altcoin specific exchanges.

Yeah exchanges were already issuing 1099-Ks but they've stopped recently (some have).

The requirements were over 200 trades AND a total of 20k to be issued one. So this would alert the IRS at a lower threshold.
