How can you reasonably expect the coach to have been aware?

No, you can't predict a flash flood, and how severe it will be.
However I believe this cave was clearly marked/labeled as being dangerous and prone to flash floods. It was clear there is a high risk of it.

You can predict that conditions are favorable for flash flooding.
You are correct though you cannot predict how severe it will be.

ANYWAYS back on topic, instead of us all pretending to be meteorologists, geologists and cave divers........
This is looking very bleak for these kids. Subterranean caves can be some of the most unpredictable environments. It's taking 5 hours for highly trained divers to make it to the kids, you would have to triple that for someone with zero experience diving, or in this case even swimming.

"We’re still waiting for the press conference to begin, as it approaches midnight in Thailand.
There are unconfirmed reports circulating that the authorities may begin the rescue mission tonight due to fears that forecast torrential rains would further endanger the trapped football team.
Efforts today to find appropriate locations to drill a shaft down to the stranded footballers were unsuccessful, meaning that the only viable option out is via the tunnels.
Elsewhere, Elon Musk announced he is in contact with the Thai authorities and has sent a team of engineers from The Boring Company, who will accompany SpaceX employees to aid the rescue effort in Tham Luang.
If the boys successfully make it out in time, the FIFA President has invited them to be guests at the World Cup final in Moscow. What a story that would be.
Lol im sure these kids give a fuk about going to the World cup final after being stranded 1 mile underground for weeks.

If the next attempt is indeed through diving then wow @ the balls and courage of the diver going in next knowing the first attempt ended in a fatality.

Question about drilling. So drilling down is out of the equation, but what about drilling THROUGH? like increasing the clearance horizontally to at least make the trek safer/easier to navigate? turn a cave like
Code:='``~-v__v~***
``~~~_^````to
Code:---*****'''''''
---....._____Elon's idea makes the most sense if I am understanding it correctly. Feed a tube in with oxygen, but fill the tunnel with a larger expanding tube to fill/conform to the surfaces to prevent water from entering. Like expanding insulation you spray into walls.

[/QUOTE]Novel idea for sure, but unless this tube is already designed, built, and in transit to the site, it is probably too late to go that route. Same with drilling. If they cant keep the cave from filling up with more water, nothing else really matters.
I am surprised that they cant pump out more water than what they have but that may be a logistics issue also.

The areas that are flooded will stay flooded for a while. The issue is that those areas its not just the water in the cave that are an issue. Its the water in the ground above the cave. You pump out the water but you've got half a mile of areas above the cave that could be flooded out too. As you drain the water out it just fills right back up. Almost gotta wonder if they gotta be careful how fast they try to drain the water too. Start sucking it out too fast and they could run the risk of parts of the caves actually collapsing. Obviously the caves flood every year but they gradually drain out. Start adding suction and it could weaken the structure.

Elons idea does make a lot of sense though. You arent risking a cave in by doing it that way.

It has just happened a lot recently where I live.
What is a flash flood watch?
According to the National Weather Service, issuing a flash flood watch indicates that the conditions are favorable for a flash flood. It does not guarantee that the area under the watch will endure a flash flood, but provides a heads up for area residents or visitors.
What is a flash flood warning?
A flash flood warning can mean that a flash flood is currently occurring or that a flash flood is imminent in the area under the advisory.
I'm done going back and forth about this so this is all I'll say. I never said the coach could predict this. I'm saying that the possibility of flash floods occurring because of favorable conditions (much like other weather events) IS PREDICTABLE. That is the reason flash flood watches and warning occur. The nature of the flooding during an actual flash flood is the unpredictable part because areas of towns flood suddenly because of poor drainage or other reasons.

You can predict that conditions are favorable for flash flooding.
You are correct though you cannot predict how severe it will be.
