No riding this weekend, but I am stoked to get back into it this week. Peaking for powerlifting is fun but it does force you to cease and desist all exercise to facilitate recovery for a week!

For those interested I went 7/9 (missed last squat and bench) and walked away with a big (for me) +27.5kg total PR.

S: 190kg (419lbs) - Missed 195kg
B: 122.5kg (270lbs) - Missed 130kg
D: 237.5kg (523lbs)
Total: 550kg (1213lbs)

I did qualify for the British Champs but I'm awaiting the dates as it may well clash with the Triathlon in September. It would also be good to take a nice long offseason and chase that 600kg total I've been after for the last two years.

Nice long road ride this week hopefully, then some MTB fun lined up for the weekend.

In.

Got a nasty sunburn yesterday. First time it's been warm enough to ride without a jacket since February so my arms haven't seen any sun this spring. Feels good man.

Good work on the meet John.

Wife and child picked up from airport last night. I am so tired. Apparently lost a shed load of weight in the 2 weeks. Cant tell as have no scales in the house. (OCD)

Bought a saddle bag. Had enough of holding the world in my jersey.

Arm and leg sleeves have arrived. Hope this chit weather stops so i can go out and spin for a bit soon.

I am slowly getting sucked in to going down the castelli clothing route. Also them chrome Kursk urban spd shoes look mint. Any of you got them?

Just dropping by for a quick question. Has anyone experienced a boost in cycling endurance by sprinting?

I am trying to improve my endurance for longer rides and as much as I love cycling I like to have a diverse training regime and I'm looking for other ways to improve my cycling abilities through ways other than actually cycling (which I will still obviously do, just looking to spice things up a little bit) and I'm wondering if sprinting can actually improve my endurance and not only my bicycle sprints?

After riding last weekend in 7,500-9,000 feet of elevation, I feel like a machine down here @ 1,200 feet.

This is from my Austin ride the other evening after work, along Lake Austin by Mount Bonnell.

You might want to get a 32 cassette, I just changed from a 11-28 and its way better. There are a lot of short (0.3-1m) punchy climbs here that average 10%+ and hit 15% or higher in spots. I was able to spin 90 rpm up Mt. Bonnell that averages 8% for about a half mile. I have no problem using my short-cage Durace RD on 32 cassette, even though they say you need an Ultegra Long-Cage. I can think DurianRider for that tip - spin to win brah.
How interconnected is Austin when it comes to bike paths and street paths? Meaning, can you safely do a legit century ride around the city without duplicating certain paths?

Within Houston there is George Bush Park to Beltway 8 that is about 25 miles, but anything more than that you have to repeat areas. There is no easy, safe way to loop it. The only real options are to head outside of town in the Brookshire/Fulshear/Katy area.

You dont know how bad I wish i could of done the MS150 ride (Houston to Austin) here in TX right after my Great Divide ride. The centuries everyday and the elevation ... then coming back to sea level = beast mode. I'd say within a month all of that extra beast mode dissappeared. Crazy how fast it goes.

You may not benefit from the effect of the material or padding if wearing underwear under the gear.

But if it floats your boat. You will soon find out why people prefer not to.

Then again. Wearing something OVER the bib shorts will allow the bib to do what was intended.

Personally. I fukin hate spandex. But the saddle on longer rides will ruin me without the padding. I look like i have a puffy camel toe in my bib shorts. NO HOMO

I am riding it for the second year now. Rode it last year as well. It is a local ride for me. Some advice, It can be really cold waiting on the bridge, bring a big garbage bag with a hole cut for your head, great for staying warm pre-race. Also the line for the check in on Fri/Sat gets long early so if you can get there early go for it. Also all the real climbing starts after Bear so save your legs.

Slipped around unless I pulled it as high as possible and put my olly leggings on over them.

Then actually spent a decent amount of money and considerably noticed a difference. Light and day.

Incredible/short article by Ryan Nyquist (now 38 years old)

https://psbmx.com/2016/07/24/ride-wi...over-quantity/
When I was younger, I would spend endless hours riding my bike. Literally spend my entire day at the skatepark or down at the jumps riding with friends, enjoying myself and learning new tricks. It was what I lived for. It’s all I wanted to do on the weekends and after school. I just wanted to ride my bike. I didn’t have too much else going on in my life back then. Very little responsibilities, no schedule, no girlfriend. Just all the time in the world to ride.

I miss those days. Those days are long gone. Nowadays, my sessions are 2 hours long, at a time that works with my wife and kids’ schedules, with whomever can ride at that odd time. I pick and chose what bike I ride based on what’s coming up on my schedule and I ride maybe 3 days a week. It doesn’t sound like much, right? Especially when you compare it to when I was younger! But I’ve come to learn that as long as the quality of my session is on point the quantity doesn’t matter as much. Trust me. I would love to ride all day everyday. But if I can get a good session in with some fun, motivated people, on a good set up, then I can leave with the same content feeling I did when I was younger after an 8 hour day of riding. I learned to make the most of what I have. To make sure that every time I go riding I enjoy myself and the company I’m in. To laugh and ride hard and do things that make me feel good on my bike.

I’m actually sitting in my car now, waiting for my buddy to show up and ride with me. We have about 2 hours before the sun goes down, and the sun will be in our eyes, and it’s pretty warm out, but I’m still extremely excited to get out there and ride and to laugh, to joke around and to try to get that feeling of flying. It’s all about Quality over quantity

There's good evidence to suggest that it does. From memory there's a track coach somewhere in the US whose runners have like 7 golds at the Olympics/worlds/whatever, i read this article once on how his methods were very controversial because his 400m+ specialists never run a 400m until they compete... they do endurance runs and shorter sprints.

It seems counter intuitive but they have the finishes to back it up. Apparently done right it will work with any distance, the issue is that if you want your 100m to be better then the best way is to train SPECIFICALLY for that.

Definitely - Since I moved here recently, I have found following Lance Armstrong on Strava and recreating his routes is helpful. He is always going out with groups doing 60-100 miles on relatively safe loops that I didn't know existed. But also, just go to Austin on Google Maps, turn the Bike Path filter on, and you can see the myriad of ways to combine good routes.

I map Strava Routes using while looking at Google Maps to try to utilize bike lanes as much as possible. Then route that to my Garmin 1000 for turn by turn. Plus, you will find that once your out of downtown, into West Lake, Great Hills, or anywhere South the traffic isn't bad and bike lanes / shoulders aren't even really needed as long as you stay off the busier roads. Tons of little neighborhoods you can get around on to rack up elevation. Not hard for me to go out on a 25m ride and get 2-3k of elevation if I wanted, all in quiet neighborhoods. The west side is hilly, the east side is flat.

I'm doing the 100 mile ride from Austin to Shiner, TX in 2 weeks. It ends where they brew Shiner Bock. You get 4 beers + unlimited sausage and some bands playing.

I've never believed in that because to many different physiques types to make that assertion -- way too many. That said, there are cycling fundamentals that are good to follow since they do work for the majority...just not everyone.

Those mandates are always designed around a bell curve with some people being left out. Just think, can we all wear the same type of underwear? The whole point there is that we're not all built the same.

That reminds me of collar shirts: I'm fine wearing them, but some guys are always complaining about wearing shirts with collars and ties. I finally noticed that every single one of them also had a short neck where the collar would rub against their chin. An issue (because of my longer neck) I didn't have.

YES, they are "designed" to be in contact with the skin. What I'm saying is that irrespective of the design there is no one size fits all; and that there will be a percentage for whatever reasons that the design will not adhere too.

If you fall within the 80% fine, but if you're one of the 20% outside of the curve nobody is going to arrest you if you have to make modifications.

Keep in mind that there was a model for the design, and it likely was not the guy that weighs 375 pounds and may have a sensitivity to synthetic fabrics. Even spandex has its limits.
