lol, I was really interested in the TP9 when we were talking about them a good bit ITT before, but I think MAC really overstated their case and the holster/sight/spare parts availability isn't their strong suit. Plus I thought about how much ammo costs vs the gun itself and saving a couple hundred bucks or whatever on the gun itself...meh.

I'd spend an extra $75 and just get another 17, used. The difference in money you'll make up on mags/accessories anyway.

If you're not looking for a mountain bike (sounds like you aren't) and you aren't going to be riding lengthy stretches of road/racing (again), then you want a hybrid. Fairly thin tires (standard is 700x32 now, a couple of years ago many were coming w/ thinner 700x28 tires), flat bar, aluminum frame. Component sets (brakes, shifters, derailleurs, etc) make up the difference in price points. Most people could get by with a $500 msrp bike for a long time - add maybe $200 if you want to get into a couple tiers higher. If you look into it in like Sept or so, there may be carryover stock from this season that's marked down, sometimes significantly.


Most people will tell you to go to a good dedicated bike shop and get the bike that fits you well both frame size and adjustments in the seat and handlebars. If you want to step up a notch or two and get a little better component set, you could reasonably expect to pay $700 for a well equipped hybrid that will last for a very long time.


ETA: some models you might want to Google to see options would be the Trek FX series (7.3 FX, FX3, 7.4 FX are good options, imo), Specialized Sirrus series, Cannondale Quick or Quick Speed, Giant Escape. There are others, but those are some that come to mind.

If your not an experienced rider, and don't want to wrench on a bike, don't get a fixie. Get a singlespeed with a freewheel for simplicity.

Riding a fixie will tear up your hips, hills are a pain (both up and down), and stopping is just a chore.

Gear'd bikes are nice, if you don't mind not being a hipster. Makes hills and speed actually fun. Buy something of decent quality though. Cheap cables and derailuers are more trouble than they are worth.

I and my friends actually ordered bikes from bikes direct. Decent price for decent bikes. Some assembly required if you can work a wrench.

If you plan on commuting on pavement, go with a 700cc or 29". Don't go for any suspension.

Why the hell would anyone want a bike without gears . . . even if you rarely use them? No reason to do that to yourself, IMHO.

They'll be like bikes from Target. They are of a lesser quality in every way, but there are probably some that are sufficient. They will be the type that if something goes wrong and you need to have it fixed, a shop will likely not be wiling to work on it after a few years because their components are not very good and they can't trust that they will work well even after being fixed. (So they often opt to not touch them so they aren't always backlogged "re-fixing" (for no additional money) bikes they already had in their shop.) That said, if you just want to ride to the store or gym 2-3 miles every so often, there's probably some that will do it just fine.

My commuter/fitness bike is the lowest tier mtb from GT. Bout 350, srs.

I have a few hills so I needed gears. Front suspension doesn't rattle me around and I like to ride on stuff I should ride on. Disc brakes are good.

I got a good deal on a bike from GiantNerd.com a few years ago but I sold that one. I don't know if they still have good deals. I got my 2013 Trek Remedy 9 online for a good price but I can't remember where I ordered it. It wasn't Bikes Direct. I also bought a bike on Amazon once but you really have to know what you want.

There is usually a Performance Bicycle locally you can check out some bikes at, especially if you're looking for a cheapie.

Depends on what you are looking for. With Amazon, there is such a vast variety. You got no-name bikes where its's no better than going to your local walmart to tier-0 $2000+ bikes.

Same rules would apply. You need to know what your goal is and your price range. Figure out what kind of bike would meet your needs.

how much do I need to spend? I'd like to keep it under $500, don't need the world's greatest lance armstrong bike, and while unlikely, if it gets stolen I don't want to be out of crazy money. yeah I know absolutely jack shiit about bikes, so you saying that a single speed and a fixed gear bike is news to me. I assumed that a fixed gear bike would be the easiest to maintain. I'm some what mechanically inclined and I think I could fix anything on a bike with some prior research

Pin, just to make sure you know, a fixed gear bike has no freewheel. Meaning you cant just coast down a hill without keeping the pedals going. If the rear wheel is spinning so are the cranks. Definitely not what you want. A single speed bike would be fine, but that will have a freewheel and you want it to.

Since I'm so old and broke down I can't imagine having a bike without full suspension and 30 speeds but I'm just used to mine. No thanks to a single speed.

BT dubs I converted mine to tubeless with Orange Seal, and I would definitely say it wasn't worth the trouble. Either buy tubeless out of the gate or leave the tube in.
