Currently on S1E3 of my rewatch
The acting really wasn't the best back then I must admit. Props to the actors for improving. As much as S8 sucked, the acting was great given the material

I don't mind book Bran becoming King because I know book Bran won't become a one-dimensional wannabe Mua'dib.

If, for example, Bran really is supposed to end up King, we might as well be talking about two entirely different characters, or I suppose one main character in the books and one side NPC in the show.Yeah IMO they should have done a custom storyline but it's been brought up that they were waiting and waiting on GRRM to flesh it out more and he never did. I think the better decision would have been to diverge from the book plan and conclude in a more logical way, even if antithetical to George's plot, because his plot would've taken far more time to develop.
Honestly, it really screams, "D&D stopped giving a sh*t," and that meme with the horse drawn beautifully on the one half and like a four year old finished the rest fits the situation well. As difficult as it would be for anyone to figure out how to get from GRRM's points A to B to C, and so on to the same level as the author himself, they made their own paths of least intelligence so long as it gotdone.
I'd say that bare minimum 90% of the fan theories and alternative takes that I've seen have surpassed what this multi-million dollar backed project wrought in respect to the narrative. Just a bit of scene reordering that people have cobbled together days after episodes aired were more logicalanddramatic, addressing flaws thatshouldhave hit them square in the jaw on the first viewing. Where fans meticulously try to consider ever angle and possible variable at play that would create an engaging story to follow, D&D eventually went full Kool-Aid Man through a labyrinth. Sure they reached the end, but the Kool-Aid Man was shattered to bits, leaked all over the place, and now everything is covered in sticky, red sugar-water.
We can even see how as the high quality of earlier seasons later dipped, the special effects and twists for the sake of twists blew up as constant crutches to throw money and spectacle at the viewers in the hopes that they wouldn't notice the drop off.
I don't know, the whole thing is absolutely pissening because I can't help but feel that any way you slice it, GOT was sacrificed because (1) D&D couldn't just sack up and take some ancillary credit while handing the series off to showrunners who actually cared, and (2) forDisney's Star Warsof all bloody things - fukking trite, milquetoast, derivative, Lite Brite dildo swinging, pew-pewbullsh*taimed at children too young and stupid to know any difference.
*Or a Calvin and Hobbes comic from 2011.

Bran straight up skipped an entiresemesterseason and still gets Summa Cum Laude, Sansa gets Magna, Arya travels abroad to do something with boats, and Jon gets expelled for stealing all the answers for the finals and giving them out.
Sure would explain how the writing became high school drama bullsh*t (I'm looking at you, Stark sisters).

Think about it. The NK can crack the earth by touching the ground, he can fall hundreds of feet off a dragon and be unharmed, and on top of that he's immune to dragon fire. I mean, how the hell would a human being fight something like that? They'd get killed instantly
The best way they should've done it would be if Jon gets killed by the NK in a one sided fight. The NK pieces his heart with his ice sword which turns Jon into Azor Ahai. They fight again but this time Jon wins

However, the White Walkers/Others become arguably tooweakwhen you really look at the big picture, as they really do"die almost instantaneously"from dragonglass (while Valyrian steel is merely suspected to kill them). With everyone and their mum carrying around dragonglass by the time of the big battle, the White Walkers/Night King were almost stupidly vulnerable, to the point that even soup girl "protecting" the crypts could have shanked them. And it turns out that this was yet another problem that we can lay blame upon D&D for creating.
“Necromancy animates these wights, yet they are still only dead flesh. Steel and fire will serve for them. The ones you call the Others are something more.” - Melisandre
Imagine a Game of Thrones where we didn't have to endure a montage of Sam cleaning piss and sh*t at the citadel to remember that Dragonstone has a bunch of dragonglass, or have Gendry show up to make Arya aspear(seriously, it was a fukking spear with two ends. What the actual fukk was the big deal, Arya, you daft twat?), or the Dothraki weren't planning on charging full-retard to their deaths with whiffle ball bats, or the final battle actually had some tension because the average soldier who only had a steel sword would be screwed if they got into combat with a White Walker?
The manner in which they framed Jon's inaction through the Midnight Spring Fling was one of the biggest sins of the season, failing from just a plain old, basic-bitch approach to storytelling. Jon is theonly goddamn personwho has been beating the bloody drum about the White Walkers and the army of the dead encroaching upon the living - the only one! - and he might as well have been absent for the ultimate confrontation with this very foe.
Dany, who flat out calls it "Jon'sWar," at least got ashotat taking out the Night King with dragonfire, albeit unsuccessfully.
Ary Sue literally had never evenseenthe undead untilthat day, but by some distorted mindfukkery, she is deemed the perfect answer to D&D's quandary of who canpossiblydefeat this grand threat? That's perhaps the dumbest "twist" they could have pulled out of their asses; there are better surprises in boxes of cereal.
But you know how Arya could have actually played a part in the Battle of Winterfell?
"You know, I don't like to give things away." says Martin, a grin spreading across his face. "But you don't hang a giant wolf pack on the wall unless you intend to use it."-George RR Martin
If Jon managed to fight the Night King, it should have mirrored Dany's failed attempt (fire and ice, after all), with each using their individual skillsets/weapons, but neither being remotely sufficient to singlehandedly defeat what is essentially a force of nature.
D&D's solution to the Night King, the White Walkers, and the army of the dead was tantamount to saying that you can trip a hurricane or dropkick a volcano. To really hammer home the idea of how humans would continue their petty squabbles even through the incipient apocalypse, the Long Night could have dragged all of the living along from Winterfell to at least King's Landing for longer than an hour + twenty.
Most of all, Jon facing off against the Night King would also resonate with what Davos had said to him after his resurrection: he failed, but it was time to fail again. This also shares a great deal with what Beric had once said regarding death being the first enemy and the last, and although the enemy always wins, the living must keep on fighting regardless.
If the goal was subverting tropes and cliches, they failed thefukkout of that considering Arya ripped off that dagger drop from Star Wars, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Far Cry 3, and god knows what else, amongst the host of other cliches that befell just that single episode in a season of rotten writing. But something that would have "subverted expectations" without feeling like a slap in the face? Why make it a win or lose, good vs evil, one episode resolution in the first place? The fact that they completely wrapped up the most longstanding conflict in the show within a single shoddy episode was the greatest "subversion" of my own expectations because what kind of Mickey Mouse bullsh*t writing isthat?!?

If Jon was useless against the NK then he should have DIED fighting him, Dany should have lived because of this, and humanity should have gotten what it deserved!
Jon being useless against the NK is a huge lynch pin for the ending, but who am I kidding? Anyone Jon doesn't kill, Arya could have. She was a catch-all.

Seven hells and a half, this freefolk edit of King's Landingmakes it look like the Night King took a detour instead of attacking Winterfell, and it's my new canon.
Arya didn't evenbelongin Winterfell for that fight, let alone the women and children*, and instead she should have been off doing her own redemption arc with the Hound either joining her or catching up over in King's Landing. In light of the above, there reallywerefar too many main characters thrown in together for no other reason than another "epic moment" like the Beyond the Wall suicide squad on steroids. But by throwing in their stupid, elite assassin ex machina into the equation, then doubled down on that by making herstab death, they perpetuated their idiot snowball that kept erasing whatever suspension of disbelief could be leftover.
*Spoiler!
So when Arya finally does get to King's Landing, her escapades through the crumbling city come across as somehow even more of a joke. Rather than the audience wondering how they main characters will deal with Cersei, they think, "why not just have Arya face-sneak-kill her?" Instead of the audience thinking about how anyone will be able to handle Mad Dany on a raging dragon, they go, "why not just have Arya jumpshark-stab her?" In D&D's moronic attempt to subvert azor ahai or any typical cliches or tropes, they completed Arya's evolution into a walking amalgamation herself, now presumably capable of exerting her divine intervention skillset and fixing every problem.
On a note related to cliches, that neck grab that the Night King did, bloody hell. First off, if someone or something is strong enough to literallylift a person by their throat, they are probably crushing their larynx in the process. Anyone, including Arya, would be too busy seeing stars if a goddamned ice demon was air-choking them to do a knife trick.
Secondly, if we are to seriously buy that Arya wasso fast, like a blue fukking cartoon hedgehog, that she somehow made the hair on the one White Walker's hair shoot up, then her velocity would have also likely given her at least whiplash, if not a full on spinal injury, after being caught midair by agoddamned ice demon.
Third, the Night King is so cold that he is impervious todragon fire, so him merely touching Arya should have put her damn near into shock, killing her cells in the area like severe frostbite, causing numbness, and possibly cutting off circulation to her brain. But you're telling me Arya walks away without so much as abruisewhen the Night King is so magically cold that he left a permanent mark on Bran through avision?!?Fukk off, D&D.
*e.g. if they can manage to retcon Season 8 so that the White Walkers aren't completely/totally destroyed just because the Night King got knife dropped by a 12 year old anime character.
However, if they can recapture the magic of the first seasons of the original GOT series, includingactual magic, maybe they can craft a series with enough passion that it helps erase the damage done already.
My fingers are crossed and I'm bashing every wooden surface like hell that this turns out, though. Hopefully HBO learned not to lock the series into one set of showrunners who might decide to piss off at the eleventh hour.

Talk about a pissing contest with Helm's Deep here, going so far as to throw in the helpless women and children bit. Except that in The Two Towers, those unable to fighthadto seek refuge in Helm's Deep because it wasthelast refuge that could hold out against the Uruk-Hai. Winterfell is out in the heart of bumfukk where the army of the dead are heading, so the women, children, elderly, ect. should have already been evacuated towards Moat Callin. In fact, have some soldiers accompany them to explain how in the hell they only losthalfduring the battle at Winterfell as a sorry excuse for them suddenly respawning droves of soldiers later.

It's not like she was a psychopath murdering strictly for enjoyment or arousal. I'm sure she enjoyed it but her motivation was always vengeance.
The show began to unabashedly run in her favor as soon as she hit Braavos, removing all repercussions thatanycharacter should have faced.
Brooming through some off the top of my head:
Spoiler!
[*]Arya abandons her assignment for the Faceless Men to pursue Meryn Trant, killing him in a brothel.
Consequence: Arya goes blind for breaking the Faceless Men rules forbidding killing for personal vengeance.
Just kidding. She enters a state equivalent to the hyperbolic time chamber and becomesthe perfect fighter.
[*]Arya walks around carefreeknowingthat she just walked away from an insane death cult, flashing money and being an overall cocky little twat.
Consequence: She gets knifed so hard that the Red Wedding would be jealous, falls into dirty water, gets revived by a nap and soup, and has an Assassin's Creed chase down a crowded street.
[*]Arya kills the member sent to assassinate her for breaking the rules of the Faceless Men.
Consequence: She gets a job offer, despite failing to abide by the rules of the Faceless Men in the first place.
[*]Arya not only abandons the secret death cult she had been training with, she steals their face-stealing magic and takes it to Westeros in order to continue breaking the very rules of the Faceless Men.
Consequence: She gets a stat boost and unlocks knife skills
[*]Arya kills two men offscreen, cuts them into pieces, bakes them into a pie, proceeds to feed said kinpie to the sons' father, tells him this as he's eating, and then slits his throat.
Consequence:YAAAASSS!
[*]Arya wipes out an entire House, then tells the remaining women and children not only who killed their husbands, brothers, and fathers, but throws in a "North Remembers."
Consequence: Nothing other than a passing remark about the Frey's suddenly going extinct.
[*]Arya spars with a larger, far more experienced warrior.
Consequence: Draw. A fookingdraw. This was the same warrior, Brienee of fukking Tarth, who beat the Hound (albeit a wounded Sandor, but still), who had previously done this:

^This should be the summation of Arya's arc - a scrappy underdog who keeps getting the sh*t beat out of her, but keeps getting up anyway.
[*]Arya's bag of faces gets discovered by Sansa.
Consequence: No,Sansais the bad guy trying to betray Jon.
[*]Arya goes all Hannibal Lecter, monologuing about some dumbsh*t game of faces to a rightfully confused Sansa who obviously doesn't know the rules (nor do we, really. The show did a piss poor justifying its existence), and then threatens to kill her own sister and wear her face around to see how it feels being Sansa instead of ever bothering to develop a sense of empathy like a normal human person.
[*]Arya kills a high lord during a kangaroo trial .
Consequence:YAAAAASSSSSSS!
[*]Arya hits and quits Gendry.
Consequence: Actually, she did him a favor here. Gendry must not have looked directly at literally any other female while in the North or he got brain damaged or something.
[*]Arya is surrounded by wights in a stealth mission.
Consequence: Berric dies and we get one of the most insulting line retcons to justify the next part.
[*]Arya gets deus ex'd at an ice demon that is capable of breaking a person (he can throw a spear like one of Euron's ballistas), screaming like a lunatic, and then gets caught midair by the throat.
Consequence: Pulls a cliche knife drop trick despite the fact that her neck should be broken and saves all of life.
[*]Arya teams up with Sansa against Jon to harp about his new girlfriend, then guilt trips him about family needing to stick together.
Consequence: one small step towards hundreds of thousands dying, one giant ride the hell away from that precious family Arya was spouting on about to pursue her own goals once again.
[*]Arya gets caught amidst the terror of Dany unleashing hell upon King's Landing.
Consequence: She... um... She gets more people killed, walks off with a few scrapes, and rides off into the sunset on a convenient horse that fukks off into the ether literally the next episode/scene.
[*]Arya threatens to murder the Queen of the Iron Islands at a peace meeting.
- Consequence?

By removing 99% of accountability for Arya's actions, she becomes this vehicle for power fantasy, easily falling into the unending effort to top the previous stunt, out-edging her already edgy attitude. Once we reach the series end, Arya spent more time like a stumpy, female Joffrey, and it grates me how one of my favorite characters during the beginning became so bloody unlikable that I was wishing for someone to punt her soul into oblivion. At least with Sansa, she wasalwayssh*tty. But Arya? Dear little Arya? The real Arya died in Braavos.
And fuk "overarching themes" of a condemnation of war. How about accepting that fact that war has shaped humanity and just get over the anti-war crusades.
100% agreed, mate. That is one area where people need to reevaluate their hippie high horse stance because in ASOIAF, it's a literally war against the army of the dead. Yes, we can decry the lack of consequences to Cersei courtesy of Deus Ex Ary' Sue, or ignoring the greater threat(s), but it was always going to be a war in the story. And as you noted, human history has been defined by violence and campaigns vying for destroying one another. Hell, there is arguably great appeal specificallyforthe violent aspect of GOT, which speaks to our very nature as humans. Why anyone would want to watch GOT in the hopes of specifically seeing war and violence talked down in favor of rose petals and unicorn farts when HBO also has Sesame Street is a curious choice.

I thought only Danaerys and Catelyn Stark had been recast after they shot the original pilot.
Completely forgot Tamzin Merchant was supposed to be the Mother of Dragons...

So yeah, that's a relief because the poster looks like a Netflix original.
Show-Arya is pretty fukking mental, though, and she is never called out on how clearly disturbed she is to face real consequences at any point. Where it gets muddied is simply how the show bounces between crazy Arya and plucky, underdog Arya as the plot demands a change.

There are plenty of other forms of market competition than warfare that can drive innovation and growth.
