You can do something cool and either keep it fixed or install a freewheel gear on the other side of the wheel (both sides of the wheel should me threaded). I'll send you a snap of mine.
But as far as simplicity, a single speed / fixy is the easiest to maintain and adjust.
Whatever you buy, plan on having to get at least a new saddle and possibly new bars.

WE bike crew now? Gun talk, thread slows to a crawl. Switch to bikes, and *BAM!*... thread explodes.
Fixies are fun, but would not recommend for a newbie. Learning gear ratios, knowing your riding pattern (flats, hills, etc), learning to pace. That and it's hard on the hips and knees. I used to MTB 26" fixxie, but I'm not 30 no more, and 30lbs heavier.
Single speed is fun, easy to maintain, but hills can still be a drag if you are not in shape. You got one gear.
700cc and 29" pretty much the same wheel diameter, BUT... when people refer to 29", you're refering to more of wheel width, so more towards mountain bikes, some hybrids or comfort bikes. 700cc are found on roadies and hybrids. Fast, low rolling resistance, less road friction, but a HARD RIDE. You will feel every bump, crack, and pebble you ride over. You will get to know your road surface really well.
Having the same diameter, but wider tire, lower air pressure, you will sacrifice rolling resistance for a smoother ride. You can balance it out by getting some quality slicks (tires with no tread), but not recommended in wet weather. Honestly, just avoid knobby off-road tires if all your riding is on pavement, and call it good.
I do NOT recommend any suspension. Reason being, if you're not dropping at least a grand on a bike, you are wasting massive amounts of energy and money. Cheap bikes with cheap suspension isn't going to do you any good except make you tired. Instead, spend the money on a quality saddle. Your ass and legs will appreciate it more.
Now if you want some front suspension, it's okay. Smooths out the ride so your teeth don't rattle as much, and you don't lose too much energy with massive bobbing up and down (unless you are standing and pedaling, thus shifting your weight forward). Downside is that it adds a lot of weight over rigid forks.
Geared bikes are good, but I recommend NOT going to your LBS. You'll spend twice as much for a cheap bike when you can mail order a quality one for the same price. THere is only two reasons to shop at an LBS. You want to support local business AND you like their maintenance warranty. Something goes wrong with the bike, you drop it off and they fix it. That's what you are paying the extra $$$ for.

Judge Andrew Napolitano appeared on "Fox and Friends" this morning to react to a bombshell report that the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is illegally stockpiling the personal information of gun owners.
Judge Napolitano explained that the government is supposed to gather that information for statistical purposes only, and they are mandated to destroy identifiable information such as names and addresses.
The report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), however, found that the ATF is not adhering to that policy.
"Congress decided that since the states regulate guns - not the federal government - the federal government would never be able to keep a list of every gun owner and every gun owned by that person," Judge Napolitano said. "But they are."
He attributed this disturbing revelation to the anti-gun policies of the Obama administration: "This lawless administration has broken that law and retained that information."
He warned that this is not only illegal, it gives a future anti-gun president or administration the ability to harass gun owners and possibly even confiscate their firearms.
"It's reprehensible, it violates federal law, it violates a Supreme Court opinion, it violates our natural right to self-defense, which is protected by the Second Amendment."

There's a recall on my vehicle. The "airbag inflators can degrade over time, especially after long term exposure in hot and humid regions. If the propellant degrades to a certain level, the inflators may rupture during deployment, causing serious or fatal injuries".

used to love hearing customers complain about how they're going to die at any second bc of the takata recall...ma'am its only for the passenger side, just don't have someone sit there for the next few weeks if you're uncomfortable.

I think that the Mk12s look really good, but the cheesegrater doesn't make a lot of sense, and paying a lot of extra money for a cheesegrater makes less sense.
