to me, the goal during your earning years is to increase your net worth as much and as fast as you can; this doesn't necessarily have to be done through passive income/dividends etc as those income vehicles can always be purchased when required.

Yeah if you have investments in a non registered account and you receive dividends, you'll probably get a tax slip, I got a T5 from one of my accounts.
