Went up to Angel Fire, NM, camped, rode the bike park, dropped my motorcycle on my bad ankle.

Trip was a complete disaster. Won't go into the details, but worst trip of my life.

I'm not blessed with riches, but I am rich with blessings.
Thank you, LORD, my God.

First ride back after dropping my motorcycle on my bad ankle.

It was a small group ride with friends, had a blast. 2x Sisters loop, then Wild Horse, to Scorpion East to Bush Lite back to parking.

Still riding in a walking boot. On a gearie bike... currently a mullet mixed-wheel. Currently building a new 29" wheel for it.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for cyclists who hog up an entire lane like that.

Find routes in quiet areas
Utilize bike lanes
Pre-map your route to avoid shoulder-less roads
Go EARLY in the morning
Finish the ride before morning rush hour
Take the sidewalk when your only other option is dying on the road
Dismount and walk on the grass on blind curves

Was the driver correct in monster trucking over those roadies?

No, of course not.

But the laws of physics don't care about the laws of the road.

a measly 30 miles in on the single speed last night

checking out this new park this weekend, a repurposed dump mound. Local group SORBA got it sponsored by Trek to help build it.

I ride 100% on the road and regular drivers are scary enough without the random psychopath intentionally running people over.

Obviously the distracted drivers are a concern, but the most dangerous people in my experience are the drivers that see you and need to make a turn in front of you. The classic 'Right Hook.' They will speed up to get around you, then slam on the brakes to make the turn and underestimate how quickly you will meet at the intersection. I've had a few near misses, and my riding buddy got taken out by some old lady who admitted she saw him and went for it anyway.

Just another day on the trail.

ngl... not back 100%. I can feel it on the trail. Not as fast, and my balance is off. Still riding with a boot on my left ankle.

I just can't stay off the bike. It's my mental therapy.

Fuark, just put 4-piston hydraulic brakes on my MTB (only ever used 2 piston) and I LOVE the 4 piston brakes.

My old brakes were completely destroyed, and used heavily, so new brakes alone would have felt amazing, but 4 pistons?! The dream.

I can modulate them perfectly for backwards nose wheelies, manuals, stoppies, etc. it's as if I gained exponential skill instantaneously by putting them on lol.

Also, I'm 6'1" but just bought 165mm cranks for the MTB. I'll try them out tomorrow, but I don't believe I'll notice much difference from my old 170's.

I'm almost done reading this book "the upper half of the motorcycle".... It's not just for motorcycling! Tons of good info about your brain's ability to learn physical activity, and how sometimes it's better to lean on your subconscious skill instead of over-thinking everything you do. Truly a good book, lots of photos to explain stuff. I'd highly recommend for any 2-wheeled rider, motorized or not.

Well boyos, something is wrong with my right knee. I feel like I've aggravated an old MTB injury, maybe my meniscus is torn?

As a result, I bought a used road bike for $350. Giant DEFY. Thing absolutely RIPS. I forgot how fast road bikes are. My knee feels a lot safer on pavement than dirt, so I'll probably be doing pavement for a while until this weird selling subsides.

Shimano 105.

Always funny when people sell these 10yr old road bikes and they still have pristine original grip tape, and in my case, still had the plastic stickers on the brakes that protect it from scratching when new.... Also the dork disc, and stock reflectors were still there .....

I used my chain-checker tool and the chain is essentially new....

In other words, this bike was basically left nearly un-ridden for 12 years.

Probably 10 speed? Is it aluminum or carbon fiber?

I think most MTBers would be pleasantly surprised at how fun a road bike is. It's completely different, but cool for it's own reasons.

Yeah I can't run the same chain for 12 months without the chain checker tool showing that it is completely toast.

Yes, 10s, 12-28 cassette. Chainring is 34/50 I think.

Aluminum frame, carbon fork.

I assumed the ride quality of aluminum would be bad.... I am blown away at how smooth it is. Maybe the carbon fork takes on all the vibration? It also has a carbon seatpost so I'm wondering if that's what smooths it out? Or maybe Giant just figured out how to make aluminum ride better?

Regardless, I came in with low expectations and am so pumped at how good it turned out.

Planning on summiting MT Lemmon in Tucson this fall. 7,000 feet of gain over 27 miles. Then 27 miles back down at 45mph.

Can't wait.

Damn. Ben O'Connor did what I wanted CARAPAZ to do. Absolute domination.

The bookies didn't even have Ben on the map for this stage.

Damn I'm having a riot on the road bike. I'm slow AF and want to get a VERY basic bike computer to track my average speeds and such. Average speed on Strava was 16.8 over 34 relatively flat miles lol. SAD!

I need the computer out front so I can get some perception while I'm out there.

Not a bad start. Are you riding in the drops? You can pick up a few MPH if you do that alone. Are you focusing in cadence of 90ish? Do you have clips or are you flat pedal?

You dont have a GPS for your MTN bike? I have a Garmin Edge 25 somewhere that I haven't used for years if you want something like that.

I switch between drops, hoods, and the tops depending on the situation. Keep in mind this isn't my first plunge into road biking, but it's the first time I've done it with very good modern equipment. I use flat pedals, and now because of my knee I'll probably always use flat pedals.

Managed to do just over 50 miles yesterday at 17.5mph average. I can see how I'll easily improve.

Nothing other than the Strava app on my phone. I just ordered a cat eye computer and new headlight so that should help!

Labor day so no cars on the road.

Decided to attempt a 100 mile ride with possible bitch-out points at 65 miles, and 75 miles, then the last 25 would be an out-and-back so I could conceivably turn around at any point on that stretch.

I wore my 100oz CamelBak because I start at 4am, and pretty much every convenience store is closed - my only water for at least 2 hours is what i bring, and i was heading off into desert roads that are sparse.

Mile 12: flat tire.... God damn it. I have stans sealant in my tubes, so I re-pump it hoping it will seal itself.... By some miracle it actually DOES.

But now I'm running the wrong pressure out back so I figure I will never complete the full 100 miles today.

Then I stop to check my tire and had my phone out, apparently I paused my Strava, but didn't re-start it lmao ... Rode another 27 miles before I stopped again to realize that the Strava wasn't recording....

We had absolutely no clouds this morning, so I started baking when the sun came out, then the wind picked up to 12mph and I was just like fuuuuuuk this lol.

Ended up doing 75 miles, and have a great feeling for my next attempt.... Oh well.

Oh well.
I'm about to do a 25-30 mile ride in the next 30 minutes. Absolute perfect weather in the Midwest today. No humidity, full sun. It's going to be great.

I hate when Strava glitches. Last time I did a 75 mile ride it stopped recording for a portion so it only recorded like 50 of them. Pissed me off.

You just gotta never touch it. Who cares if it decreases your average MPH. When you pause it is when it fuks up.
