I wish he played the whole piece:

He has that focused wrist style done to nearly perfection and he doesn't roll onto or off any notes each finger going up and down separately - and at minimal height.

Speaking of picks his design kind of makes sense but I don't know if I could get used to something being that thick. I've had really thick picks before with nice beveling and hated it, his like like 5x thicker lol.

He has that extreme angle almost double jointed thumb too, very much like Shawn Lane.

But at the end of the day, who here really cares too much or notices the different between 22NPS or 25NPS? At some point you have to compose something that will be remembered when you die, that's when you know you've got the full ability.

It's sad seeing people argue about who's the fastest, for one it depends on what you're playing and the phrasing. If you're playing chromatics and sliding you will read much higher speeds. Play wider intervals or fretting from air and it's 100x more difficult requiring a lot more control and varied muscle memory. I still have seen nothing overall that tops Shawn Lane in terms of the whole package of freaky genetics but this guy I linked definitely has that phrasing/approach faster. But he's admitted he's basically just perfect that his whole life. but the technique here dictated what he is playing.

Man, that rotational technique he has is maybe the fastest I've seen and heard.
Have a read through this.

Shawn Lane's had a flat fingerboard like a classical guitar. Would take some getting used to. Holdsworth liked a 20" radius which would feel almost flat.

Hey brahs, I'm looking for some advice. My 11 year old son has played guitar for 3 years. He mostly plays melodies and can play a few chords. Everything is first position and we just got him enrolled with a new instructor (previous guy closed because of COVID).

He's been playing a 3/4 size Yamaha acoustic and I want to buy him his first electric guitar. The one he likes is a Jackson Soloist. It seems to be a good size and he feels comfortable with it. Is this a good brand/choice? I know nothing about guitar and I'd like to buy him something quality that isn't crazy expensive (this one was $400 on sale, but I would be ok going up to $800). The new place sells guitars and accessories and also partners with a local guitar shop, so I'm sure they will just recommend something they sell.

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't buy from a shop because I'm not trying to pay that markup.

Buy offline or maybe even get a nice used guitar.

You should find out what specifically about that guitar he likes. If it's the pointy headstock and sharkfin fretboard inlay, then find him a Soloist that has the sharkfin inlay with a hardtail (i.e., fixed) bridge; if he's into Vai and has aspirations one day to use the bar like him, then get him the standard Soloist and block off the floating Floyd Rose for a few years.

One caveat about the Soloists: they all have neck-through bodies.

Left is bolt-on, middle is neck-through, right is set neck. So, if he's careful and respectful of his stuff, then the neck-through shouldn't be an issue, but if he's prone to breaking stuff, then bolt-on would be better.

But dad doesn't know much about guitars. For example, a crack could be in between the bottom side of fingerboard and the top side of the neck, which cannot be seen but only heard by those knowing what to listen for. That's $50-$150 repair there. Or the frets may need a crowning, that's $150-$200, or the frets may need a refret - that's $300-$500 job. Then there's twisted necks, unseated or unlevel frets, and such.

If you don't mind grinding, you can go to a place like GC, and you can grind them down to dust. Even a popular online vendor, if you call and speak to someone, you can grind them down.

The one we found was at Guitar Center. I looked at some of the other online stores and theirs was the best price.

He has tried a few different ones, this one he said he liked the weight of it and how it felt while playing it. He plays sitting, so it's important to him that it's not too heavy and it sits comfortably on his knee.

He cares for his things. He keeps his regular guitar in the case and stored safely when he's not using it. He also has a cheap Rogue that he likes to play sometimes and he keeps that on a guitar stand in the den. Is a certain neck style more preferable?

I would only consider buying new at this point. And I would have his instructor look it over. He's not likely to drop it or mishandle it, so I'm not worried about damage in that regard. But if the damage is from poor quality, I'd like to avoid that.

I truly appreciate the advice on this guys.

Just saying I've purchased quite a few awesome used guitars

Like more playable than guitars 2-3X more expensive.

I have a friend who does some minor adjustments ex truss rod adjustment.

I tend to turn around and sell them for more than I paid.

A pricetag doesn't make a guitar, playability does.

Set, bolt, and through-necks have pros and cons for each, but nothing an 11yo needs to worry about. I just brought it up because if a neck-through neck gets badly twisted due to abuse, the guitar is pretty much toast since fixing that is very involved and you can't just pop on a new neck. Since he's responsible, then that is of no concern.

The only thing you have to consider is the Floyd Rose or a fixed bridge. Pros and cons to both of those, but they are relevant considerations, especially for a beginner. If you want, post a link to the guitar.

As for the Indonesian made Soloists (the ones you're looking at), I played one last year and it was quite good. It was purchased used and the neck was bowed and the action was high enough to stick a finger under the strings, but I set it up for this person and it played very nicely. I have a custom shop San Dimas, which was 7x the price, and while there are quite a few major differences, the playability was reasonably similar.

Yes, of course. Like most anything bought new, the original buyer takes the hit. I mean, if dude's guitar teacher wants to go to a craiglist ad to scope out a used guitar for them to make sure there's nothing awry to save a few bucks, then that's a different situation.

No, I'm telling you that a brand new guitar in no way ensures that it's playable.

Most people who don't know about guitars don't understand that playability factor because they don't understand how complicated guitars are.

For example my dad was surprised when I explained that to him, he thought all a guitar needed was strings and that's it.

Technically that's true too, but there are so many fine points to a guitar, even something as small as a little sharp corner on a fret can quickly become very annoying, fret buzz, dead frets, etc. are things a person who doesn't play generally won't be conscious of.

Exactly. It's like giving a 100m runner some steel toe work boots and saying: "They are footwear, you can still run right?".

At a novice or intermediate level you could get away with any pick, fret size, neck dimensions, wood type, string gauge or general guitar set-up but as you reach you genetic limits you have to find what bests suits you. Every handle is different, different CNS, even your torso can determine the strap level you use etc.

Also some set-ups are needed to help with certain techniques better. Like hammering from nowhere with mega high action, try doing that fast and complex it can't let you simply with how hard you have to press and the distance it takes to release fully.

I've played 4-6k electric guitars yet one of the first guitars I owned which was only $120 has a fretboard I would much rather trust than many pricey guitars if I was playing live. For acoustics however, I would definitely say a higher price really does make a difference, nearly every cheap acoustic I've played is just horrific compared to like a Maton I own.

I heard I think a "Not Again" breakdown not this one. Yeah, he plays all the right notes but to be honest the tone is horrible. One thing I don't like about his playing is he nearly never varies the pick attack, every note is hit with the same force. Maybe that's needed for his speed but god so many parts of the solo really needs that subtle variation in tone with soft/hard fretting, varied pick attacks to accent certain notes etc.

Like @ 2:45 to 2:49 the first note is pick attacked hard then into some legato but he just plays it all the same. That bend made me wince, @ 2:48. I know I am being fussy but I can hear it straight away so I am sure many others can. It shows just technically playing the notes is not enough to sound really good.

But yeah, I love what he has done it's extremely entertaining to watch. He loves Shawn Lane, so he's got good taste.

I didn't say a new guitar means it will play well. I said buying used introduces another factor into the mix - how the previous owner(s) treated the instrument, and you will need a person who knows what they're doing to look at it. Do you buy a car with 50K miles on it without knowing anything about car engines and NOT have a mechanic inspect the engine?

For example, a $100 new guitar is always going to have risk. That is not just due to cheap parts and labor, but inconsistent quality control. A $5,000 Collings electric is always going to play fantastic from the factory, but that doesn't ensure it will play like it did from the factory once it gets into your hands. Any new instrument, if you want it to play its very best, will need a setup.

Yes, we're talking about an 11yo who can only play melodies in open position. My advice was for the father of that 11yo, not a person who has 30K hours of playing under his belt and has specific preferences. Come on, guys.

Buy him what he wants.

I wanted an acoustic guitar and my mom bought a cheap strat knockoff. I hated that thing. Fret sprout, buzzing strings, and I just hated it because it wasn’t what I wanted.

If my son wanted a hot pink with purple glitter inbinez I would buy it and get it professionally setup. That way he loves picking it up and playing it, which is the battle when learning to playing guitar.

Solid advice here.

I started taking lessons when I was around 12yo. I wanted to play eletric, but in school they said it was better to start with a classical (yes... lol). So, my parents bought me a classical (Takamine G124, still have it).
Conclusion: I had 1 year of lessons (didn't practice at home, don't even remember what I learnt ... if I learnt anything at all) and gave up on it for 10 years. Started playing again at 22yo. Played for a month, bought an eletric...still playing with it.

You should buy the guitar that you think you will love to play.

I get that she's popular because of her looks and, frankly, dat azz. But in terms of her actual playing I've yet to see mor hear a clip that sounded much better than an amateur player with uneven legato and mediocre picking technique.
She's good at posing though, I'll give her that.
Hope this doesn't sound sexist but 99.99% of female guitarists can't play or write music for chit.
This is the only girl I've ever listened to that blows my mind.. She is so fuking good..

Speaking of writing songs, forget about sexism, this Berklee grad Youtuber is rolling in cash and free gear with a COVID proof business model while your favorite guitarists are probably struggling to pay the rent right now.

Seriously though a few years back he had over 10,000 people paying him on Udemy for his "super system" course or whatever he calls it before he moved it all over to his website which surely was to rake in even more of the profits. I had a look and he's charging $10+/month to access his courses. His Youtube audience has doubled in size so maybe he's got 20,000 on the books. That's a couple hundred grand a month. He wouldn't pay a dime for gear because he's got companies throwing free gear at him.

Cliffs: no secret why he's always got a chit eating grin.

Anyway it's a shame right now that's one of the only business models that is viable.
