Bumping this. I have a camping trip coming up in a few weeks and I am stoked to go. Spring camping is some of my favorite, cool nights and warm days. We have been out with the kid before but there is a huge difference between 18 month old and a 24 month old. He is all about the outdoors and exploring, but that means mom and dad need to be extra vigilant with him just wandering away lmao.

Had a good trip with the wife and kiddo. Very fun overall, weather was better than expected and the campgrounds were basically empty.
Did a bunch of small "hikes" all over Big South Fork (TN/KY border), little man enjoyed throwing rocks into the water when we made it to the river.
We built a small fenced area in front of our tent to give our son a play area. We would string up the fence when we wanted to keep him contained. Allowed us to do things and not need to juggle him.
View from next to the tent, enjoyed sipping coffee and staring into the green expanse.

Going to Cataloochee (Great Smokey Mountain National Park) next week for a weekend of camping. Another family trip, excited to be up in the mountains. Apparently there are a lot of Elk, hopefully we can see some at a distance. It is expected to be raining the whole weekend, luckily we have rain gear plus the 2 year old loves to play in the water. Some pics of the area we will be in:

Back from Cataloochee. Had an amazing time and saw a ton of cool things! High points were seeing Elk at the campsite and seeing the synchronous fireflies (https://www.nps.gov/grsm/learn/nature/fireflies.htm).
Had to deal with storms from Friday evening to Saturday mid morning, it rained a ton overnight. Luckily my son (2yo) ended up not caring about some rather violent thunder/lightning while tent camping. The tent is showing its age/use, we did well till the late morning, the fly ended up becoming completely saturated and let a couple of drips in. Nothing a towel cant fix. New tent is something we want for next season, it might show up a bit sooner.

The setup - Had a nice little spot next to a brooke. Its a NPS campsite so its the normal things you would see. Only 25ish spots or so, really small. The other side of the loop was up against the river shown. In the last picture, the campsite was below the first ridge shown coming from the left.

The Elk - For those who dont know, the NPS reintroduced Elk into the Smokies back around 2000. They were basically hunted to extinction and these are from some small herds that survived way up in Canada. They were just hanging around the campsite, enjoying what was on the grill. Another one just wandered up to the site next to us and was eating in the bushes. We stumbled across one just exploring an
abandoned barn lol.

Along the way - Saw a ton of turkeys this trip. This was the only shot I was able to get of em. The second picture is an old homestead that was nearby, it was part of the park service at this point. Off the back of the house we hung on the porch getting eaten alive by skeeters, but saw the most amazing lightshow from fireflies. Not a single picture came out well. Some baby birds I saw along the way. Lastly, is just a random pic I got while I drove out of the campsite. Happy Camping Y’all.

I go every other weekend in the summer/autumn and a handful of times in winter. State campground with friends/family, primitive if on my own. Spoiled for choice in the North Eastern US, but Mount Desert Island in Maine is a particular favorite. Arcadia National Park is 100% worth the drive.
I usually car or hammock camp depending on the spot. I have a very good tent for winter camping too. Also the food is amazing. Usually bring along the bones of a decent bar, a good steak, and a few burgers + other stuff you can easily toss on the fire. Spam as well, best camp breakfast.

Probably piss off the parks service if I did that round here on public land though.

I sometimes make jerky at home for a trip. Definitely want to expand what I can cook while out in the woods though. Aside from meat, corn, and rice over the fire. Just bought a titanium mess set for trips that involve a bit of a hike, want a good cast iron dutch oven for stews/baking though.

There are a ton of marinade recipes going around, and it's basically just finding one that works for you. They mostly seem to use Worcestershire sauce as a base (though mushroom ketchup also works). Just that and a good amount of black pepper is perfectly fine for a "plain" jerky. Experimenting is also fun.
As for meats, pick the leanest beef you can find (check the sale section, they might have an entire roast on sale or something and a lot of the cheaper ones are really lean). Venison and goat are good for jerky too.
You can also make jerky in a smoker, but I don't have one of those. Same idea though, low temp, dry it out don't cook it.
