I love dogs and I would never get a puppy. They are soooo much work. My boo was a lab/pit mix and he was the best dog ever. I rescued him when he was 1,5 years old. Puppies you don't know what you're going to end up with. if you get a dog that's a year and 1/2 to 2 years you'll know their personality. Volunteeering at a shelter with your son is a great idea. Get to know the dogs, see how he does with regular responsiblities of walking dogs. Having a dog is a ton of responsibility. What are you going to do when you go to festivals? A lot of dogs can't even make it 8 hours without having to go out. they can also be expensive if medical issues pop up. All things to think about.
If you are not a high energy person do not get a high energy dog.
I'd recommend fostering a dog to see how they fit into your family. If it's a good fit, then adopt it. That is what I did with my boo. Foster failing was the best failure of my life and that adoption fee was the best money I ever spent in my life.
