I mean I do, but that Grand Canyon trip is something people do once in their lifetime as a bucket list thing, so not much can top that flight.

You can see him starting to fly down into it. If your motor goes out, you have a few hours hike up the spiral to get out...

Man this is kick ass. Is that why you don't fly over a lot of mountainous terrain with lots of trees? If the motor goes ur screwed?

These things are "the dirt bikes of the sky". You got the freedom to do whatever you want (away from public and crowded airport airspace). No license or anything, though it would be smart to spend the $3k to get proper training, its awesome, and as safe as you want to make it. usually people who die are doing ballsy stunts, or have a freak accident, and riding a motorcycle you'd have similar chances of a freak death...

"There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but you never see old BOLD pilots" is the saying in many of these activities.


Its fun as hell.



The higher you go the colder it gets. even in the AZ summertime, when I flew up to a "mountain" which is only like 2000 feet, I had to wear jeans and long sleeve shirt because it got COLD just 15 minutes form phoenix when it was 90f on the ground...
This is the Superstition Mountains right east of Phoenix, and not even that tall, you can hike them in an hour or two:







This grand canyon trip was at like 4000 feet elevation, so taking off and shit is WAY harder as there is less air density, so mountain flying usually means you're WAY up like Denver elevations where its cold, and thin air, so very difficult, but people DO do it.

And trees can be an issue, plenty of vids of people crashing into trees, not the end of the world but usually a $3000 broken wing.

We ALWAYS fly as if our motors may quit at any second (because they do, they are 2 strokes, like dirt bike engines and die a lot for random reasons) so we always have an eye out for where to emergency land.

I've had two engine outs (one time I didn't check my gas tank and ran out of fuel in training and glided back down from 1000 feet up) the other time I had an air leak in my fuel line and had to LIMP back home trying not to land in the middle of nowhere, desert.





Edit: Oh shit, I didn't know the superstitions were THIS high, no wonder its so cold up there considering the ground I took off from was in the 90s:
