Hey, I moved there after a breakup where we were living together. I needed a place and liked the space I was able to get for the $. This was about three years before I met my wife. I didn't know about the church thing until another neighbor pointed it out.

Honestly, the people who lived in my building were all really great, blue collar black people who worked for the MTA, caterers, etc. They all thought I was a cop and I owned a bulldog so they liked me living there. We shared food and grilled on the sidewalks when it was nice out, never did that when I lived in the West Village or Murray Hill. Only "crime" I experienced there was crackheads smoking their drugs in the stairwells.

Again, walking across the street to avoid a gang of black kids is prejudice and a defense mechanism, same with puerto ricans or even white kids in NYC, you avoid groups of young knuckleheads.

There were lots of blacks where I grew up and whole black neighborhoods. A lot of white liberals never even been around blacks and are naive. There are bad neighborhoods white people should not be walking around in. That's why they do a lot of stupid shit trying to prove how un racist they are and it bites them.
