I don't know about that but they did invent the idea of borrowing money and interest. It was known most places as Usury and it was considered a crime. Funny to this day, if you loan someone money and want more in return, it's still called usury but when the bank does it, it's finance. If you do want to lend your own money, you are supposed to give them the money so they can loan it out and you'll get about a quarter of the interest, if that.
