There were tons of well known people that dodged the war also. Most gave lame excuses and were given deferments(most of them being white although) Ali gave his reason as being against his religion and they just didnt buy it. Chances are he may have been able to be given a deferment with a better excuse. But lets not act like he was the only one or that he didn't have good reason.

The Nation of Islam affiliation was very controversial even at the time, though it did help keep Ali out of the hands of the mob. Ali was far from perfect with his womanizing and some of his more controversial political views but I agree the decision to not be a media puppet for the war effort and risk going to prison was the right decision.

I have a problem with him or anyone trying to dodge the war. This is the country you live in. Don't care what pathetic reasons you have. Ali grew up in an America which segregated blacks and whites and told blacks they were inferior.

He lived through black kids being refused entry to white schools. He lived through black people being kept out of white restaurants. He lived through the era where it wasn't uncommon for black men to be assaulted or even killed if they looked at a white woman the wrong way.

Denied decent jobs. Denied the right to vote. Not that far removed from lynchings being commonplace. Provided with a vastly inferior standard of education.

Emmett Till, Rosa Parks, etc. Police who were not only institutionally racist, but actively assaulted black people for ****s and giggles. Black people being arrested and convicted of crimes they didn't commit. They were oppressed to a degree that we can barely comprehend.

He has absolutely no reason to believe black people and white people could coexist. White people made it abundantly clear they didn't want to.

Yet, because he adopted the attitude that, okay, we won't coexist then - we will read the teachings of colonised people in other countries, who successfully fought colonisation, we will teach our own kind that we are not inferior, we will form our own nation, he is the racist :lol:

It's very easy to point to the example of Martin Luther King, but plenty of the most important figures in the civil rights movement - Malcolm X, Bobby Seale, Huey Newton, the list goes on - broadly believed in the same things as Ali. We are oppressed. We will fight oppression by any means necessary. You have spent a century vilifying us and telling us we are inferior, we will vilify you and tell our kind we are superior.

Ali's views were a product of his surroundings. White people gave him no reason to believe in them. As things changed, so did Ali's views. It's such a white way of looking at Ali's pov - disconnected from context - to suggest it resembled racism. They were the oppressed. They were fighting back, not casting the first stone. Even Malcolm X changed his views as he came to see coexistence in other parts of the world.

Despite all that, Ali never turned away a white kid who wanted to speak to him. He never held the sins of their fathers against them. He regularly gave speeches to white children, about bullying etc. There are photos of him teaching self defence to white children.

He took a stand and tried to help his own people, and advocated black nationalism in a country where segregation was already imposed by the white man. He and Malcolm X believed the only way to restore black pride was to create a black national identity. They didn't think this for a laugh. They thought it because black people had been stripped of their pride by white America.

And there is some evidence to suggest that Malcolm X and MLK were much closer than most people think. Malcolm X openly stated that by adopting an extreme stance, he would make MLK's more moderate approach far more palatable to white America.

Look up the Vietnam war and see what happened. There is a huge difference between being a patriot and defending your country vs killing innocent people for no good reason. Plenty of honorable people who would have signed up and fought if USA or Australia were under attack went to jail rather than participate in that.
