Pretty sure the director is Chinese, the producers are Chinese, and this is filmed in China (they have a MASSIVE filming lot that was designed to represent traditional China in terms of building structure, layout, etc. - they're trying to capture this exact kind of film to produce there and use the space..it's been built exactly for this purpose)

Beyond that though, my guess is the plot goes as so: Matt Damon isn't playing an asian character, rather he's a descendant or somehow knows how to fight off/wage war against the monsters, so he's called over to come help defend the wall.

It's always a delight to see people cry racism at whites, then look the other way at other cultures doing it. My gf and I watch the bachelor (fuk you, it's a fun show). Anyways, the host constantly gets asked, "Why is there no black bachelor on any season?" The most diverse they ever got was a very white-looking Hispanic guy one year. The host has ready answer every time - "There was a period where we were on the verge of being cancelled, around 2007 or so. Since then we've built up a strong audience and we're not interested in doing anything that might make us lose viewers. There's 300 people that work on this show that have families to feed." So your typical sjw cuck will think, "oh they can't have a black lead due to racism by whites."

If you read between the lines, he's saying that a segment of the normal bachelor viewing audience will be turned off by watching a black man in the lead. That audience? Black women.
For someone to be chosen as the lead on the Bachelor, they need to be the type of guy that the viewers would welcome into their home - smart, articulate, good manners, well-spoken, successful, etc. So if they find a black guy that meets those standards, the last thing on earth any black woman wants to see is 20 attractive white chicks pursuing him and making out with him. Now this movie seems to be actually based on the short story Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer by Frank Kafka and therefore is more an allegory of Kafka being distanced from his dad and his Jewish religion. Knowing Kafka, when Kafka writes "Chinese", he means probably means "Jew". Some authors consider the story a criticism of zionism and building the wall building Israel.

Back to the movie: I wouldn't have needed a white Protagonist to feel at home in a fantasy version of ancient China. But I certainely won't complain about Matt Damon, since he is a great actor.
I also ask myself if "whitewashing" unlike in American movies is not a good thing in this case considering how highly ideologized China still is and how it is lacking freedom of speech. Better a movie that caters to international audiences than a movie that spreads the ideas of the Communist Party of China.

The market doesn't want Asian males as leads for films. There's a difference. If certain Asian actors were able to get people to the theaters, Hollywood would would cast them. That's not the case. Hollywood is in the business of making money and are willing to pander to a demographic if they knew they could profit from it.
