It's because the US always does really well at swimming (srs). Swimming has by far the most medals available which is why the US appears to have such a siginificant medal total.
In the 2012 olympics I think like half the total US medal count was from swimming.
EDIT: Just check 31/101 medals from swimming in the US in the 2012 olympics. So basically 1/3 of their total medal count from one sport

It's a combination of things.
Large population gives you a bigger pool of talent to draw athletes from.
Wealth gap also creates hungry athletes looking to find away out of their circumstances. US maybe one of the richest nations but for a western nation it also has a huge divide in regards to wealth, the rich are really rich the poor are really poor at least for western standards.
Infrastructure and support for sports and athletes. Fact is many of the best trainers and best facilities are in the US for sports. Best boxing trainers and gyms, even though the sport on an amateur level is dead there. Bollettieri academy for tennis is one of the best in the world, the Oregon project is directly linked to the success of Mo Farah the 5Km and 10Km athlete.
Then of course there are PED's. You'd be a fool to think this isn't a factor for most countries that are having success in a wide array of sports. We all know Russia have a state operated system, I'm sure China does as well. The US may not be state run but there is a tendency to look the other way depending upon the sport. Now that doesn't mean all US athletes are dirty, far from it, it's a problem just like it is for any country.

Pretty much what has been said before, that diversity, plus you can pretty much make a living in the states being a pro in an event/sport that is pretty much irrelevant anytime baring the olympics in the USA, which means more people will try that sport, **** try and be a pro ping pong player here, you will get nothing for it.

America is an extremely rich country, with the best pharmaceutical industry in the world. Now add a racial group which is the underclass of the country where sports is one of the outlets of poverty and you have the hallmark ingredients of supreme athletes.

In my country there is absolutely no bonus if you are an athlete. If you want to play college basketball you have to pay MORE for you semesters since they have to pay coaching staff and the arenas + buses when going on the road etc.
And this applies to any sport. This is the main reason why only about 40% of young people now stay in the country.
The feels when you are in a shop and it looks like walking dead cuz average person is 75+

I just saw the men lose to italy in volleyball.
Also saw the men lose in water polo.
Of course they show alot of the USA team on tv. we dont get to see alot of the other countries. Wish we did.
Look at the winter olympics too, we have loads of snow but still dont dominate them.
