Bought my house last year for 130k
I'm content with it for my first home.
3BD 2BA nice fenced in yard w/garage
Hopefully next home will be on a little property outside of the city limits. Trying to walk out on my back deck and urinate whilst firing a pistol simultaneously. #goals

**** that. Go out in the country and buy 50-100 acres and plop a trailer on it for less than $100k. Build your house as you go
Something like this would be nice to build onhttp://listings.listhub.net/pages/NN...el=secondspace

Bought my house in 09' for 305k. It is now valued around 430-ish? Sadly even though I make a lot more money house are money pits and things come up. BRB my air conditioner goes out, don't worry that is only a $900 fix.

it does seem overwhelming, for me the hardest part is deciding where i want to buy/settle down
when i do buy, it will either be a place i can renovate, or new construction
dream is a older Victorian style house to restore and add some modern amenities but still have beautiful retro'ness to it

You can if you don't want a nice car and have no student loan debt. Our house was $360k and with a lot of stuff to fix up and having a child, it's a stretch for us because of high Illinois property taxes($900 a month). We both make about $100k a year.

OP you sound unintelligent so its a great thing you do not own a house.
I say you're unintelligent because:
-Living in an area were housing is 300k+
-Making 60k a year.

A big problem I see is couples base their affordability on both incomes. In liberal areas, property taxes are high, and definitely not going down anytime soon. A couple has kids, mom cuts back on working, and daycare becomes a necessity. Even if you do everything right and have a high income things get tight.
Student debt payments, property taxes of $1000/month or more, hoa fees, and stagnant wages are a big problem. I think a lot of people are buying too much house.

Also, like others have said, Location is key.If you go with an FHA loan, you only need 6K downpayment for a 300K home.

Around here, you can own a 2000+SQ FT house for the same monthly price you'd pay to rent a relatively new 900sq ft apartment.
