Aesthetics is the ultimate excuse for twinks who need grams of gear to bench 225 to feel good about their inferior genetics.

Basically. Being strong translates in a lot of ways to irl. Anyone who says shyt like "just lol at being strong, it's 2016 we have technology" probably doesn't lift. Hell, squatting allows you to simply walk faster without expending as much energy. It all helps in one way or another

Squat strength has been reported to increase sprint times.
Squat strength has also been reported to increase punching power.

I can safely assume that most compounds can directly translate elsewhere as well.

Some good points and insights from a few posters - obviously they all have an avi.

But it seems like the general consensus is the same among us - powerlifting does very little for building muscle and is mostly promoted by guys who lost the genetic dice roll.

"functional real life strength"............

Every time I leave the gym all my strength leaves me. Never mind I can bench 400lbs whenever I try to open a jar of pickles I feel emasculated. Feels...... Why does my strength only work in the gym!!!!

No. But I can assure you, from experience, that the vast majority of powerlifters are failed bodybuilders. Srs.

Most of them start bodybuilding until they realize they don't have good genetics and everyone is on dat dere, so they powerlift.

That is the natty dillema lol. Pick two:

- shredded
- big and strong

if you truly want to be strong, believe in yourself, have ambition, do not be afraid to fail, do not fear rejection, do or die

what others think of you doesn't make your life any different unless you let it

Aware of response thread but I'll bite. If we're going to use the term "cope" then bodybuilding and powerlifting are both ways to cope with our inefficiencies. Both are personal and neither are bad.

For example, I started lifting because i was a skinny bastard and wanted to look awesome in clothes. As I got older I decided no one really cares how aesthetic I am, but I still wanted to be stronger because I felt like I was weak. Turns out I love the latter and still lift heavy because I enjoy it plus it carries over to athletics, which being aesthetic doesn't.

You know mods are rustled to the nth degree when they close good threads with an actual discussion going on.

You are the reason why this board has been dead for years now.

and some girl's vehicle lost control and she flew out of it, with the top of that thing^ landing on her chest. Had to lift that **** up or else she would have died. And it's pretty heavy because of the engine and chit. She survived but broke all her ribs, but at least I had enough "functional strength" to lift it.

I said this in the other thread, but;

Squat strength can increase sprint speed.
Squat strength can also increase punching power.

Those are just two statements that are actually scientifically proven to have a correlation. Further, one can then infer that compound lifting is beneficial to more things than just moving a bar. Functional strength differs depending on what your goals are, too, though.

This times 12. I was in the same boat and was sick of being a skinny bish. As I started lifting and getting bigger I decided to compete in a bodybuilding show, I ended up doing two and realized I really just enjoy lifting more than dieting and being on stage so I kind of decided spur of the moment to enter in a powerlifting meet. I did that and loved all the support and camaraderie from the other lifters and stuck with it. I love lifting and enjoy lifting heavy, that's why I do it. The end

Depends on the boxer really. Stocky guys like Tyson and Naseem Hamed had relatively thick legs and generated much of their power that way. But then you have lanky sticks like Hearns who generated power through the leverage of his long limbs.

None of them squatted heavy though with the possible exception of Tyson, who started lifting when he was in prison. Of course, that's also when his skill went on a huge decline...

That said, squats generally have a great carryover to most sports.
