I'd cry for being a manager at Deloitte if people online are honest about how shyt and miserable accounting is.

Idk what to believe but probably going into finance at this point.

Preaching to the choir buddy, I am a project manager for a construction company working an 8 to 6 sometimes 7. However, I have been at this for 2 years and already despise it. I have been lucky enough to have no student debt and enough money stashed away that I won't hesitate to quit once I have a child and just do my own thing (already have a side business that I could invest into).

My parents were both corporate slaves (middle management) and I don't want my child to grow up like I did, on the fkin computer and internet all day. Yeah I had the best computer, yeah I had top tier education fully paid for but didn't have a father teaching me how to fix a car or taking me camping. He was working or always tired after working.

Year 1 of accounting is very much learning. It's pretty back office and doing piles and piles of work while the managers are client facing. Sure you do some work on client site but you rarely make significant decisions.

Hence someone, anyone with 1 year experience at a big firm isn't any more special than someone with 1 year experience at a smaller firm.

Infact if anything, at a smaller firm the person will have had to work harder, learn faster and with less resources and there would be people with 3, 5, etc years experience at smaller firms, hundreds of them, begging for that job opening at a big firm who would be far more "valuable"

Will you retire as soon as you have a child? Will you switch to a 30 hour job? Will you be okay with the pay cut/not having a main income source?

I'm all for work-life balance argument but your life is supposed to get progressively better in terms of luxury and comfort; not worse!

Won't happen before age 27/28 and by then he may want to build some 'real' experience under his belt, as well as savings and the mentality may be completely different in terms of settling instead of travelling.

But even then a career break would probably make more sense than now. Straight after graduation made the most sense really. Or in between jobs, but I guess that literally means being fired from this one and moving elsewhere and having to grind it out right from the bottom

Investment banking pays far more than big 4 but what classes as "busy season" in big 4 is your typical week in IB.

Fresh MBA hires get damn near $200k at top US consulting firms. The base is probably only like $150k, but you also get a signing bonus, probably a relocation bonus, a performance bonus, solid health and retirement benefits as well as the ability to expense tons of stuff to the firm.

I don't know why anybody who had a choice would do tax/audit or why you make it sound like it's some great job that anybody would give an arm and a leg for. You'll make $140k after over a decade of the most boring work I can imagine.

Leave your job, but do something cool like try to climb everest, then apply to an MBA program and try to land a consulting gig the next time around.

Deloitte has an HR department and subsequent HR policies....It isnt up to you, as middle management, to determine what the employee can do.

In any corp environment I've ever worked if you wanted to take six months off it would have to be a long term disability claim or your a** can go find a new job.
