I see thousands of young professionals commit the grave mistake of buying Tag Heuers, Breitlings, Baume Merciers, and of course, the watch that labels you an instant rube: the Rolex Daytona. It's comical to see attorneys with Omega Seamasters or other nautically themed watches because a majority of them can't even swim, much less do deep diving (poon diving doesn't count here) or sea exploration. Unless you are a pilot, wearing a Breitling Navitimer is as ridiculous as you showing up to court in a flight suit.
Same goes for a Rolex Daytona: unless you are a professional race car driver or know how to read a tachymetre, wearing such a watch makes you look like an unsophisticated novice to the scions you are trying to impress. Sure these watches may impress hookers, strippers and hoi polloi, but in my eyes you will be instantly discredited.
If you want to dress the part, do away with the millennial popular option of the Apple Watch or other digital fitbit watches. Let's face it, you are not an athlete or training for the Olympics. While folks have different tastes, you cannot go wrong with the following watch makers:
1) Patek Philippe;
2) Audemars Piguet;
3) Breguet; and,
4) Jaeger-LeCoultre
If you are on a budget and need validation for your success, I suppose you can get a Rolex Daytona that is DATELESS. The dateless feature is key. At a minimum, with this watch you can carry on as a watch purist poseur. If you want to follow the herd, just get the standard Rolex Daytona which will show successful individuals that you are just an average follower of watch trends. Also, don't be shocked if every other person who sees your Rolex asks you "is that real?" since the Chinese have nearly perfected the counterfeit market on Rolexes.
Personally, I own three Patek Philippes, including a 1917 pocket watch. My current watch (that's on my wrist right now) is a Patek Philippe Nautilus, which I have owned since 1989. Remember, the watch brands I recommended are not fashion statements, they are legacy pieces.

I mis-typed. I meant to say a dateless submariner, if you are going for a cheap watch and want to maintain the appearance of some basic level of dignity. There is never an excuse to get a Daytona, unless, as I said, you are a are a professional race car driver or know how to read a tachymetre.

1) No Date Rolex Submariner;
2) Rolex Explorer II; and,
3) Omega Speedmaster Professional MANUAL with the Hesalite Crystal-Man on the Moon Edition (do not go for the cheaper Omegas, i.e., Seamasters)
(Honorable Mention: Seiko Grand Seiko-a good one will run you about $5.5K)
These watches are acceptable as entry level "luxury" watches, meaning, if you are between the ages of 25-35, these watches are respectable. However, if you find yourself wearing a Rolex Submariner (except the 18K gold model) at the age of 40, it doesn't speak highly of you. Seriously, if you want to know true quality, go to a jeweler that sells Patek Philippe. Everything from the packaging (e.g., I love the glossy wooden case) to the build quality of the watch is impeccable. Sure Rolexes and Omegas can take a beating as an everyday watch, but for a special occasion, nothing says "you've arrived" than wearing a Patek.

I appreciate nice watches but dont have the money to spend on them. I get it though. $100 poverty watch for me is maxing it out. Thats the most I will spend on one. I usually just dont wear one as they sort of bug the hell out if me. used to be I could not even try one on without freaking out but i got over that stage.
i do wear a heart rate monitor one when I am working out but only for that purpose. take it off when I am done.

Can't go wrong with the big three:
Patek Phillip
Audemars Piguet
Vacheron Constantin
Honourable mentions:
1. A. Lange und Sรถhne and
2. Jaeger-LeCoultre
Real Madrid, Miami Heat, New York Jets.

If you want a nice watch, my advice is to save a few more years before looking at buying an actual peer watch -- and I am not talking about the Rolex Daytona.
1) Patek Philippe;

FYI for most plebs ITT hating on watches, the top makers like Rolex and Audemars can often end up appreciating as they age. Like vintage Ferraris. Not really a waste of money if you can afford it

People actually do notice. Especially people with an ounce of class.
And lol at thinking a few hundred dollars is a lot for a watch.
That said, it's more about aesthetics than brand name. Too many idiots spend thousands on a watch that looks like chit when they could've easily spent around $300-$500 on a watch that looks fantastic. You really only need one or two, and you can stick with one for 10+ years.

If you want a nice watch, my advice is to save a few more years before looking at buying an actual peer watch -- and I am not talking about the Rolex Daytona.
1) Patek Philippe;
2) Audemars Piguet;

If I were a pleb limited to a $3K to $5K watch budget, I would get the following in order:
1) No Date Rolex Submariner;
