I think the problem with some Asian miscers is that they likely grew up in areas with very few Asians. We only make up about 5% of the population in the U.S. and are mostly concentrated in California, New York, and Hawaii. If you don't live in one of those three states you're likely not going to have a good time as an Asian, and that would partially explain the low self-esteem shown by some of them. And even in California and New York, you need to live in or around a major city. I live in LA.
And by the same token, most people simply don't know any Asians. Hell, even in cities with major Asian populations we mostly stick with each other. It's easier to stereotype what you don't know.

Haven't met any Asians until I went to a university. I know a couple of guys that I play basketball with, they can ball pretty good. Guess I shouldn't have been surprised since bball is becoming more international.

When i was 10 years old, my parents took me to Disneyland for the first time. It was on track to be the happiest moment of my life. 10 min after we got in, I wandered off to look at the toys at the gift shop. Thats when three white teenagers pushed me onto the floor and beat me up just for being Asian. To make matters worse, Mickey Mouse was standing not 20 feet away and he saw the whole thing.

I'm living temporarily in (Northern) Europe, and yeah, people know that I am Asian (duh), but I am treated just like any local. My town has like 50k people and there are very few people of Asian descend. Sometimes people ask me which Asian country are you from and that's it.
I don't suffer from any affirmative action, don't have to attain absurd GPA in order to get a place in a good university, recruiters don't care that I'm not a local and don't have a typical Finnish white name. Women don't go "oh you're Asian ewww" and avoid me like a plague.
I can say that I have a pretty good life here, but I'm also tempted to go to the U.S. to spice things up. But the thought that people discriminate you on the ground of race kinda scares me.

I know a lot of completely Americanized Asians not speaking their language or appreciating the food. When I have kids one day, they will speak Vietnamese, even if it's broken Vietnamese and hard to understand.

I would say that the U.S. is generally more tolerant than other countries given the situation. You can't really compare it to Northern European nations such as Finland, which never really had to deal with race. Instead, compare the U.S. with other multicultural nations such as... Australia or South Africa, for example.
