Mayweather has a well-known and widely criticized personal life that majority of people don't like and for good reason. Connor on the other hand has built a story and upbringing that many people, including Americans feel inspired by and makes it difficult to want to root against him. That, and the whole MMA vs boxing that adds another variable into who they are rooting for.
