I'm freezing it. Might actually be smart to just keep it locked all the time and just temporarily unfreeze when opening an account or buying a house or something. Never thought about it but I don't see any reason to have my credit constantly susceptible to identity theft.
But yeah fukk Equifax

Freezing credit just prevents you or anyone from taking out new loans in your name for the most part.

There's been some great info on here so far However....
what you should do
- The last thing to do is to input your info into one of those sites to check if you've been affected.
- What you should do is order your credit report and look it over and see if anything is there that shouldn't be. Make sure to check your inquires for new credit/loan applications you didn't make
- Most credit card companies already offer free credit monitoring. Enroll if you haven't done so already (some update it monthly or weekly). What you want to look for is any new accounts and inquires
- Contact all of the 3 credit companies directly and place fraud alerts (this is free to do)
- As for your credit cards, you can freeze them or just simply call them up and tell them to issues you a new credit card number (note: you will not be able to use you current CC and will have to wait till the new one comes is and you will have to re-enroll in any auto debt payments you have)
- I would also go to the bank/call them up and get new account numbers (Yes, this will be a hassle especially if you already have automatic debt or bill pay from your account)
- Make a reminder to yourself during tax season to be extra aware. IF your SSN was bought up on "the DRAK WEB" they just might be waiting for tax day to come along and take your refund from you.
- If you have been affected go to sites like IdentityTheft. gov
-- I understand that it's tempting to just put some of your info in and have it tell you if you've been affect or not. But don't do it. Theres's a good chance that you are fauked, just like the rest of us!!!!!!!----
-- This most effective and drastic thing to do is to change your SSN, but this is not as easy to do. Maybe they will relax their policy now that this happened but even people that have been victims of ID theft still have a hard time changing their SSN.---.

As a public tax accountant, we already have enough issues with identity theft as it is with hackers using clients' SSNs as a way to file phony tax returns to claim refunds. I am not aware of any additional IRS procedures to strictly verify taxpayer identity in light of this Equifax breach, but this surely will be hell on me next tax year, I think.
My advice to you is to file your tax return as soon as you have all the documents you need next year. If you don't, you may be shocked to find out someone already filed a tax return for you.

Some info on next steps to take if you have been affected:
"Protecting your identity
September 11, 2017 by TransUnion
Protecting your identity is always a smart thing to do. You have the power to manage the accessibility and security of your own information and the right to take steps to do so. You can protect yourself and we are ready to help you.
Take steps to control your information:
If you have concerns about the Equifax® data breach, please contact Equifax by clicking here or at 866-447-7559.
Step 1: Be on alert
If you have been part of a data breach, the breached company should notify you directly. Keep information they provide and follow up on the steps and suggestions they may have.
Pay attention to calls or mail
You may receive communications that aren’t expected either from a lender or from the IRS regarding your taxes or even from a collector about an account you don’t know anything about. These are all signs you have been a victim of identity theft. If this happens, contact the creditor or IRS immediately and then contact us and we’ll be ready to guide you on what to do next.
Step 2: Monitor your credit reports
Know your rights!
You have the right to a free credit report from all 3 credit bureaus every year. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com for your free report. Reviewing the reports is the best way to see if there’s unusual activity like a new account or new or different personal information or inquiries from lenders you don’t recognize.
Step 3: Monitor your financial accounts
Get organized
Visit all your online bank and financial accounts, and if you haven’t already, set up any alert features they may have. Adding these alerts will ensure you are notified of anything unusual occurring on existing accounts and could help you prevent fraud and move quickly if fraud has occurred.
Step 4: Initiate a fraud alert
Take action
If you have been the victim of fraud you can take instant action and place an initial fraud alert. Once you’ve done this we will notify the other 2 major credit bureaus. This step will warn lenders that you may have been a fraud victim and they will contact you directly before any new loan or credit is established in your name. The alert will stay on your credit report for 90 days and you can renew it when it expires.
Step 5: Lock your credit fileLock your credit information by enrolling in TrueIdentity.
You can lock access to your TransUnion credit file with a swipe of your finger or a click of a mouse. You’ll receive ongoing credit monitoring with this completely free service. No credit card required – instant access. Control is in your hands. TransUnion is the only bureau offering this free service.
About credit freeze
A credit freeze may be available under your state law. Be aware, a credit freeze may require payment of a fee as well as a waiting period when you want to unfreeze it to apply for credit in the future. For more information, click here.
Please be aware that we are experiencing extremely high volume and there may be delays."

I know someone who checked and said he wasn't effected then he checked a week later and it said he was. I would check it at least once a week for a while.

My buddy left his wallet at his brothers house.
Somehow, 8 houses down, the neighbor stole his identity and tried to get his tax return.
It took 3 years and hours and hours and hours of calls/sitting/waiting to get it cleared... **** THAT ****. Now he has to have a special code for financial things.

Terrible timing since I've been building my credit for a home mortgage. About to apply next week. I bought myself LifeLock just in case.

I just use Experian's free credit monitoring thing to see my credit accounts; I have 3 open accounts so it's easy to keep track of them and if something else comes up it will show a new account opened in my name. Means I can put a stop to it pretty fast, and it keeps track of my FICO and other credit factors all for free. Recommended.

Everyone is guaranteed one free credit report each year, so you can request a report and look for some suspicious activity
https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action
And if you're unfortunate enough, you would want to report for fraudulent credit then file for id theft
https://www.identitytheft.gov/Assistant
---
So it sounds as if EFX was never audited? CVE or not, millions of PII records that aren't encrypted at rest is something that should've been addressed long ago
