I don't know how it works in the USA, but in the UK smokers are very much net contributors to the National Health Service (source: my sister used to be on the alcohol & nicotine tax group at Her Majesty's Treasury). HMT sets the tax rates on nicotine knowing full well that it's addictive and that people who are already addicted can be treated as life-long cash cows because the demand responds very sluggishly to increases in prices. The vast majority of the cost of a cigarette in the UK is tax. Smokers as a demographic also don't cost as much for the NHS as non-smokers because they tend to die young of cancer or lung problems rather than growing old (getting old takes longer and ends up costing a lot over time).

If you don't like smoking that's fine OP but you sound judgmental and annoying by coughing at smokers when you just happen to walk past them. I'd get it if they were standing next to you in a limited space, but even then you could just be a functioning non-autistic adult and speak to them openly about it to work out a compromise.

Addiction doesn't function the same for everyone young bro.

But I'm the same way or at least was, I'm 3 months cold turkey on both MJ and cigs. I never could really smoke an entire pack in a day unless I was doing mad partying, and even then I was giving away a ton during those events.

That is what they would lead you to believe. Healthcare in the US isn't free if you are a young to middle aged white male/female (or black male) working class individual. People 65 or older get free healthcare with Medicare. People with zero or very low income and kids, and most black women with children get Medicaid, which is also free. When you apply, they ask you if you are Hispanic/Black at least five times during the automated process. I'll let you figure out that one.

The goal of Obamacare wasn't to get free healthcare for everyone, it was some sort of governmental/insurance company collusion to drain more money out of the working class. The only people it was good for already had free healthcare. That is my rant for the day. Smokers cost the taxpayer 170 billion dollars a year.

None of this is true.

Certain people have genetic predispositions to addictive behaviors. Some people have genetic predispositions to cigarette smoking itself (which is probably the result of epigenetic changes).

Makes me rage when I see trashy Walmart people smoking in front of their babies and kids.

I also find it ironic when there are broke people begging for money on the street and 9/10 they smoke.

smoking is a good stress reliever and conversation tool. I only smoke when i go out, and i dont mind the smell at all before i started

If you are addicted to anyting, you are an addict. Addicts all have similar traits, which usually follows inconsiderate behavior.

All statistics show that smoking is more of a favorable trait of people with lower intelligence and education. Having an addictions shows lack of will power and ability. Not only does it cost you initially buying it, then of course added healthcare cost, but there is also evidence that a smoker will take a paycut to work where they accommodate their smoking. I have watched people get in trouble at work because they were smoking all the time and not doing their job.

Guy I know well is an electrician. Works for a damn good company, pays well, benefits, tempts me to try to get in. Because smokers weren't following the rules, they made a no-smoking on job sites rule or on any company property or vehicles. He said a considerable number of smokers quit immediately. Many of them found other jobs first, but when all was said and one, about 80% of the smokers quit, and most of them took lesser jobs and/or lesser companies. It attracted non-smokers, and well productivity actually went up. Most of the smokers were the lower producing employees and lower end anyways. I know the power company actually test it's employees for nicotine. I do believe it's an intrusion in people's lives at that point, but then again, not having co-workers that needed to smoke all of the time is a real bonus.
