I've always used dumbells that way I can just drop them if needed.
I just want to share the knowledge I have obtained throughout my life and hopefully change someone's life.

Probably just barely managed to unrack it and it came crashing down upon his chest and wrecked him. Doesn't look like he could've controlled 200+ lbs

people do strange things when panicked and 200lbs will crush your trachea and kill you in a hurry..

might have been as simple as missing the rerack and panicking, you never know.

This. My friend puts up 315 but hes a potato. I have seen him hit the rack multiple times on the way up because he wont scoot forward. I have seen him loose his footing on bench, and he also doesnt breath. This is someone who has been lifting for a while.

Also scary chit. He was probably ego lifting and doing half reps, butmost people that lift alone have had a close call or two.
Yup. I've only had one close call in my life, but I still get shivers up my spine when I think about what could have happened, if the guy working at the gym didn't immediately see I was in trouble and get the bar off of me.

Basically when I was just starting lifting as a college freshman, I got the bar stuck on my chest. Then I panicked and tried to roll it off of me, by rolling it up towards my face, instead of down towards my waist. I managed to get it up to like my jaw area and ran out of strength so it was just resting on my face like that.... if I had managed to get it up just a little higher before my strength failed, it could have ended up resting right on my eyeballs which would have been horrific.

Bench press never again...DB chest press for life...better engagement according to EMG studies, and u can just rotate your shoulders and drop the weight if it gets too hard without killing yourself. Seriously, DB chest is just better. No reason to bench unless you are a monster going for ridiculous str gains, and in that case, you know what you are risking because if you drop that weight, you are done.

yeah? story says it was on his neck. if that bar came down hard on his neck then sure it'd kill him.

I mean it's solid advice to have a spotter when you're unsure, but the fact that he failed on his lift isn't really the issue here. The issue was that the bar came down on his neck.
I frequently work w/ 225lb doing pause reps where I will actually rest the bar on myself briefly and I haven't been hurt doing so or even come close

My high school had a Oly lifting team, and everyone who was an athlete was required to take a weightlifting class year round instead of chit like regular PE. Freshman year everyone was taught to never use clips. If you cant lift the weight with proper form and keep the weights in place on the bar, you're doing it wrong. No clips on bench also makes it super easy to roll the weight off of one side if you get stuck and have it sitting on your chest.

Still never use clips on any lifts

I hate stories like this all they do is scare soccer moms into not letting their kids lift weights.

As for benching, there is NEVER a reason for 99% of the population to put flippin clamps on while your bench pressing. Clamps are only for squats, heavy deads and olympic lifts.

Useful on squats tho...weights can and have slide off...not good if you're going heavy

Lol at posters acting like dumbbells are safer

A lifter could just as easily drop a dumbbell on their face, tear a rotator cuff during a bail, or most likely, injure themselves while getting the dumbbells in position

wide grip has been debunked as it doesn't "incorporate" more chest, rather stretches a completely UN noticeable or beneficial muscle near the delt - you can check jeff cavalier on that one. but more importantly, the ROM **** is ****ing retarded. you have a worse mechanical advantage in leveraging the weight and can lift less. i swear u tradies are testing me

My weight lifting coach in high school used to tell new lifters a similar story to scare them. Said some young chad was ego lifting 230lb on the incline to show off to some girls and the bar fell on his neck. Said he luckily lived thanks to his neck gains.

Had a bench in my bedroom when I was 12 and finally worked up to being able to hit 100 x 8-10 reps and was stoked. The next morning I rolled right out of bed and laid on the bench to enjoy my newfound strength. Unracked the weight with no warmup and brought it to my chest and could not get it to budge. Felt like I was a dead man but luckily I was able to roll the bar down to my stomach and sit up. Scary AF especially considering every PE coach I had following that age told us stories of kids dying from benching at home with no spotter.

Kid dies and some posters wondering if ~200lbs of weight can crush you to death?

Err, is water wet? Try dropping a 0.5lb plate on your foot from 2 feet and see what happens. Now imagine 100lbs and your neck isn't as tough as your foot.
