But thats my own opinion I still love the other bands from the 90s, Red hot chilis, soundgarden, AFI, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, smashing pumpkins, NIN, RATM ( OG vocalist only )
but what separated these bands from nirvana had to be the delivery of the grungy sound

Nirvana killed the 80's hair bands and ushered in Grunge to the masses. There were so many great bands in the 90's. Cobain had a voice that fit his music and their style.
I liked Candlebox a lot in the 90's myself and think they were overshadowed if not underrated. But there just great music back in the 90's. Damn I feel old now. But at least I was getting blown and banging bishes to Nirvana amongst others.

When Nirvana first came out, it was a very new sound so you have to put that into perspective. I do think they wouldn't have been hyped throughout history if not for the fact that they basically spearheaded the grunge phase and curt cobain committed suicide.

This brings a tear to my eye. Not really but still fuq all you young kunts.
I remember it like yesterday.
My older bro was friends with this rock radio guy and would always get the heads up on the lesser known and the latest upcoming chit. He had a great taste in music looking back and got me exposed to the good chit at a young age.
One day he brings home this tape with a song that the other guy had recorded for him to check out, by some new band called Nirvana. We had a chuckle at the name Nirvana while looking for the song for some reason.
It was the very sweet spot in time when the band was mature enough already, having done an album, but right before they exploded (as in right before teen spirit was everywhere) still very under the radar, still largerly unknown, so that sample song we got WAS actually SLTS.
We had no idea wtf and we weren't ready for it at all. There was no hype, no prep but when that chit played, it quite plainly sounded like a song I always wanted to hear. I couldn't relate or anything, and I wasn't a dirty grunger. I was like 11 or 12 and my favorite band was probably GNR, but SLTS had the fuqing sound and the fuqing attitude that just slapped you across the face to sober you the fuq up from the bullchit. I remember we looked at each other when it ended and were like holy chit... this is something special.
Nirvana was never about the skill at all. it created a feel that will always be unmistakable. They basically said "here's another way you can feel about music" and as great as all those bands mentioned in this thread were (and many of them were better bands), they never did THAT. And yes, they were grunge, just not quite the absolute unfiltered grunge that Nirvana was in everything that it was. Nomsayin *******s?

This is exactly how I remember it too and GNR was my fav band at the time too. Fuark, listening to a new song on tape deck and wondering how it was going to be and having your mind blown at the new sound of Nirvana. Feels.

It was an era of hair bands that had shredders on lead guitar...Nirvana was a band that showed everyone you could look like garbage, play sh*tty instruments with only 2 strings, "sing" like sh*t about whiney touchy-feely crap and still make it. Every flannel wearing, nose-ringed ******* who was going to die working in a record shop could identify with this.

Because Cobain is one of very few artists that actually sounds good when he screams, ie. smells like teen spirit and where did you sleep last night.

Nirvana unplugged is one of the best albums of the 90's.
One of the first bands I ever remember liking, camp counselors played nothing but grunge. So much nostalgia.
I hated the dirty, unwashed look but the music was awesome.
To these guys it wasn't a gimmick. A lot of them were in really dark places, drugs, depression etc. When they're singing a sad song, they make you feel their pain. That's lost today. If you went to a show, you might get magic, but just it was just as likely to crash and burn.
Cliffs: They were real people, playing real music about real feels.
