I don't understand whats wrong with bringing a fruit? I love watermelon, my black girlfriend loves watermelon so we eat it. I would gladly bring and share my watermelon with her black family and my white family. I bring friend chicken and water melon to her family gatherings all the time, they fukking love that stuff.

Stop oversimplifying the situation. No, a firefighter did NOT get fired for bringing a watermelon into a firestation. A firefighter DID get fired for bringing a watermelon into a firststate that is predominantly black, knowing full well about the stereotypes in existence.

He clearly did it as a racial joke.

I think it's quite odd that a firefighter whom is white would bring a watermelon to a majority black fire house. It's not the joke itself that I believe he should have been let go or at the very least written up,it's the fact that he's a rookie. You can't just walk into a firehouse and begin busting peoples balls passive aggressively. I'm sure it had more to do with the lack of respect than being 'offended'. It's no different than if a recruit disrespected a drill sgt, only difference is he wasn't in a camp.

imo, the guy shouldn't have brought in a watermelon when he knew he was walking into a station primarily housed by African-Americans. I'm sure he either did that with no ill-thought and possibly as a joke but not everyone has to get along with your joke, specially when you're the new guy around who's trying to get acquainted. Maybe they wouldn't have reacted this way if he wasn't the new guy and they'd known each other for a while but when you're a new guy that's just a no-no.
