because technology is always heavily interdisciplinary. You can't have people building particle accelerators yet unable to construct anything better than a mudhut. if mastery of physics and engineering is so great that you can break or circumvent laws of physics to the point that it becomes mundane (as is the case with FTL travel), you can sure as sh!t create and protect an atmosphere from solar wind.

terraforming would be much more time and labor intensive though - it's such a vast project - so its possible someone could know how to go about it and just not have the resources available.. it still all sounds like bull**** anyway

Gonna have to disagree with you on a few things here.

First, I must point out that FTL travel is impossible with our current understanding of physics. The best we could do is travel and a rate close to lightspeed which for the people aboard the ship say traveling to a star 10 light years away, would only seem like a couple years to them but about 12 years to us. Worm hole or Hyperspace travel is theoretically possible though, which would allow us to travel great distances in a relatively short time.

Now on to terraforming. Having access to interstellar travel does not mean you would have access to terraforming technology. That's like saying because Humans have traveled to the moon we should have hover cars. Technology isn't mutually exclusive. If we take the premise of marsrussiabrah that the martians destroyed their atmosphere in a nuclear type war, it would be nigh impossible to create an atmosphere after the fact. Especially considering that Mars has very weak magnetism compared to say Earth. You need the magnetism to protect against even minor solar winds. It is far easier to change an existing atmosphere than to create a new one.

Last thing, assuming the mars guy is telling the truth, it should be seen as a little unnerving that Martians used to come to earth and pretend to be gods to humans, got into a huge war on their home planet, retained interstellar travel, yet still choose to live on their own planet instead of moving to a different solar system with a planet that would better suit their needs or could be more easily terraformed. I'm guessing the only reason they haven't terraformed Earth is because our gravity is too much for them.

From what he states the soul is immortal and while the martians could live way longer than humans they still fought and had wars all the time. THe wars being nuclear in nature left the surface uninhabitable. Some still remain under the surface.
