Stop being clueless. I was an manager of one gym chain when you were jiz and ran a PT biz out of Worlds Gym for a decade. You have no idea what you're talking about. That a large % of people who get a membership will rarely to never use it is typical of the industry, and well known, which is a very different thing than intentionally targeting those who will not use their memberships. That you can't seem to get the difference is why PF exists at all. Sad.

A gym with 100 people signed to a year contract with automatic monthly membership withdrawal where most drop out after a few months

vs

A gym that has 100 people sign up month to month and never come back after a few months

Which is going to put more money in the owner's pocket? They'd be dumb not to do it that way.

I'm sure they pull stunts like this in part to attract members. Any publicity is good publicity.

I also think there is a segment of the population who are better-served by lower-intensity workouts. You can be healthy and fit without pushing yourself to the max all the time.

Apparently you can't differentiate scum bag biz approaches with simple profit. The former can be very profitable. I never claimed otherwise. It's a model that's profitable to be sure, but it's not a model used, to that level, as PF does, by most other chains, to varying degrees. All your above example does is confirm that.

It's much more profitable to claim X dose on a label of a supplement, and not actually have that dose in the supplement too. Happens all the time. That also makes you a scum bag supp biz owner.

Again, the two are not mutually exclusive concepts.

So, the lunk alarm is not to keep "lunks" under control while in the gym, it is to piss off people that actually work out into giving them free advertisement on message forums.

Look, I wouldn't join there, but I have a friend who's a member and I TRIED to get her into more legit lifting/working out--she doesn't want to do it. But consistently going in and doing 40 minutes on the elliptical plus some abs stuff is better for her than doing NOTHING, or than injuring her back, which is what happened last time she tried to squat on her own. I felt bad about that srs, she wouldn't have been trying that if I hadn't shown her in person.

Guys come on hes just Bulking, its off season.

But srs, I just got a membership about 2 months ago at PF. I go 3x a week never once have I had pizza/bagels/candy. I keep my head down i go, i work out, i leave.
It is the only gym near my that isnt some bs "classes gym" or "personal training only" place. It fits my budget and is convenient.

All that being said I definitely agree I am not their target audience at all but it does work for me.(right now)
And my work out is Greyskull with arms plug in:

Reread my original quote of yours - here, I'll copypasta it for you:

"It depends on people not going to the gym and paying just enough per month to not close the account, and when you go to close the account, they make it a big PITA."

I never mentioned food, I never mentioned PF in my initial response. The sentence of your which I quoted doesn't mention those things either - Does PF take it a step further? Sure. That wasn't the point of my post, hence not mentioning PF. I was pointing out that having people not go to the gym after they sign up is how gyms make their money. Any gym I've ever gone to has had contracts - once you sign up and they have your money on automatic withdrawal, they don't care if you return.

To say it's nonsense that most gyms use this as a business model is, well, nonsense. Gyms use the non-committal common folk to stay afloat.

Just lol. I once walked into a pf with a friend and the manager told me that since I was wearing a stringer I had to leave, meanwhile 400 lb rednecks were jerking their 70 pound dumbbells while wearing cut offs down to their hips and their rolls hung out.

I went on another trip and the same manager told me that I would have to leave if i didn't stop "training" people. I was just lifting with a buddy.

Never again pf never again.

Agreed on all that, but that's not the business model we're discussing in regards to PFs approach vs others. There's a major difference in how PF approaches the biz vs the others. You're comment was they all follow the PF approach, and that's not correct. Now, other d bags, seeing PF making $ have started to follow some of it, but none of the major chains I have worked in or trained in, actively targeted those who will never use the gym astheir target market, ban anyone who even looks like they may use legit weight, lunk alarms, etc, etc. This is a must see. It's LOL and sad, and you'd think it was a joke, but it's legit. I was contacted by the producers of the segment. I didn't make it on the show, but was tapped as a source for them to follow up, details, etc. Watch for the LOLs and "WTF?" and tell me of another chain like that:

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
The Plight of Muscled Americans

http://www.cc.com/video-clips/yp51yc...cled-americans
