Have done both with all 3 though, cuz I was 9 when they came out and played obsessively, still IMO the best handheld games of all time.

bulbasaur was the smartest pick tho bc you can replace charizard with moltres later and squirtle with articuno but venusaur is the best grass pokemon. legendary birds + venusaur + mewtwo + dragonite = game over man game over

I never let it evolve, I had a lvl 100 Bulbasaur and it was actually pretty strong.
