P230 isn't too bad brother, I haven't done the drop test on mine as I don't want to fuk it up. All I did was had a friend put in a heavy trigger pull.

OP, as other's said Glock 19 personally I love the XDS. They're spot on like glocks however they're American made and not quite as expensive and very reliable. Fiddle with a few in store that feels best in your hand. If you have friends with handguns use some of theirs on the range to figure which shoots more comfortable for you and snag on of those.

Glock 17 is a classic, but the grip angle isn’t for everybody

I’ve owned a Springfield XDm and a Smith & Wesson M&P. XDm was fine, but nothing special. Love the M&P though.

Buying online is relatively simply. I’ve used Buds Guns. You buy the gun, and they’ll give you a list of approved FFL dealers near you.

The gun is shipped to whichever dealer you select, you go in and fill out the background check paperwork, and pay a small ffl transfer fee and you’re done

You'll almost always find the best deals online. Occasionally you will run across a better (or equivalent) deal locally, depending on where you are and what you are looking for.

But you can check sites like these first and see what is out there. Depending on state laws you may or may not be able to buy online--but seeing you are in TX, that shouldn't be an issue. You just buy online, have the gun shipped to your local FFL (licensed firearms seller), get background checked and take it home if you pass.

OP, not to confuse the issue, but if you're looking at home defense/security, have you considered a shotgun? Extremely simple to operate and guaranteed to stop a bad guy cold.

On the subject of handguns, my M&P in 9mm is my ideal handgun. Father in law has a Glock and I've tried it out on the range - agree with all the praise it's getting ITT.

Glock 19 gen 5 or Glock 43. Stick with 9mm, best balance of lethality, capacity and recoil control.

My pistol of choice would be Glock26. Shoots more accurate for me than p320 or VP9.

Also the fact that you can get 30 round magazines for it in the event of a multiple assailant situation (if you have a high threat risk IE known threats)

Most are going to be more accurate with a VP9 or a Walther, but the Glock has one tremendous advantage which is that accessories are literally everywhere for it and PMags are super cheap. Not to mention that you can use G18 mags.

OP the way I would go first is this.

Find a friend with one or more pistols.

Join a range that has rentals.

Go to range with friend and rent a model you're interested in.

That way you can test 4 guns at once.

Then you can rent others.

Figure out which one fits your needs the best then buy it.

go to the range and rent some different 9mm glocks. full size is the g17, compact g19 (best handgun on the market), then the smaller glock 26 and 43.

I carry my 19 daily and it's widely considered the best handgun out there all things considered. SEALs just switched over to it recently. glock makes the most reliable and best firearm out there and that's just a fact, though other brands are still great and you can't go wrong with other options. no thumb safety on glocks so they're ready to rock and roll

seriously, go to your local range that rents and rent some different calibers and size handguns and find what works for you. everyone is different

as for best place to buy it, your local range will probably have one. they're pretty closely priced everywhere

For the gun, the easy answer is "Glock G19 Gen4". Accessories are readily available, capacity is good, they're fairly easy to shoot, totally reliable, and you can probably find one for ~$500.

For a slightly better shooting pistol, look at a Walther PPQ M2 or an H&K VP9 (Full size or SK)
I second this. I agree with everything he said. I picked-up a G19-G4 with a case and three magazines for $450 a few months ago. Super reliable and a great all rounder.

The only flaw I notice with it is the springs in the magazine are very tight at first, and it takes some breaking in for them to loosen up a bit.

If you have an upcoming local gun show in your area, try buy a handgun from there. Private sellers usually have some amazing deals and you can pick-up a great bargain.

My current carry that could double as home defense without any issue is an XDm 3.8 compact 9mm. Not very expensive, good trigger, grip feels amazing and doesn't seem to carry when my hands start getting sweaty after a few hundred rounds.



M&P 2.0 Compact looks to be similar in size to a Glock 19 so it'd be great for home and carry. I've been thinking about picking one up to compliment my current home gun which is a first gen full size M&P 9.

As you can see, you're getting as many different answers as you would if you asked what vehicle to buy. Because each of us have guns that fit us, just like a car.

Go to a reputable range and test some different options (it'll probably cost a small rental fee) then pick the one that fits you best.

This really is the best option unless you have a bunch of friends with guns. Check out several ranges because some will have a lot more for rental than others.

Another miscer said and I will echo it- go to the range and fire each gun. Saved me from buying that chit “bodyguard” 380 and its long azz trigger pull. well well worth the measly hundred bucks it’ll cost

You really need to shoot them first.

Asking the forum is a great way to narrow down your choices, but guns are hugely personal choices.

Learn what you like. Unless you are making bank I would recommend 9mm over 40. The price per box difference makes a lot of difference for shooting your first.
