Black Panther premiered in Los Angeles on January 29, 2018, and was released theatrically in the United States on February 16, 2018, in 2D, 3D, IMAX and other premium large formats. The film received praise for its screenplay, direction, performances, costume design, production merits, and soundtrack, though the CGI effects received some criticism. Critics considered it as one of the best films set in the MCU and noted its cultural significance. It has grossed over $1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2018, as well as the seventh highest-grossing film ever in the United States and 21st highest-grossing film of all time. Its four-day opening weekend gross of $242.1 million and its three-day gross of $202 million in the United States were the second and fifth highest of all time, respectively, as well as the biggest debut by an African-American director.

A larger minority representation in Hollywood can be a very positive thing for certain groups.

Sad, but was only a matter of time, this is the sad path our society is headed. Goodbye merit based systems, jobs will now be based on your race, sexuality and gender.

It's actually an insult to all the great black actors like denzel washington and Samuel El Jackson who got to where they are based on hard work. Now people will be hired based on their skin colour.

Hold on there, boyo. NO ONE here is talking about handing roles out to people for free. Plenty of actors/actresses work hard and don't make it due to things beyond their control. See: dat dere weinstein

Hiring people based on race/gender is the definition of racism/sexism. I think you're confused.

Support what? Force-placing minorities in positions of power "just 'cause"? Or casting actors properly based on story context, talent, and role?

Not a false dichotomy either, that's quite literally what they're suggesting.

Why? Why do "certain groups" need to see themselves represented, as if they can't have white role models, or asian role models, or whatever. Why do they need to see someone from their specific race in order to feel fulfilled/inspired? Sounds.. Oh, I don't know.. Kinda fukcin' racist to me.

Racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

I think YOU'RE confused. The current system has an overrepresentation of certain groups, and an underrepresentation of certain groups. The current system perpetuates negative stereotypes of certain groups. Inclusion is an excellent way to dispel these negative stereotypes.

Also..

One of the primary intentions of popular movies/TV shows is ideology dissemination. Humans are unconsciously socialized through movies/TV shows. Many of your opinions, beliefs, preconceived notions, etc. are actually a result of what you see on the movies/TV/books/advertising.

Hollywood doesn't always accurately portray certain groups. In the past, women were often portrayed as a "damsel in distress", contributing to the society-wide opinion that women must always need the help of a man. In reality, women and men are both people, and are both capable of being independent.

I'm glad you brought up "Asians". Look up the "ideal minority" stereotype, and how negatively it effects Asians. Asians, specifically men, need a wider representation in Hollywood to get rid of the "nerdy, smart, quiet" stereotype.

If what I'm saying is coming as a surprise, I recommend looking into a lot of the sociological research currently going on in race/ethnicity, specifically racial stereotyping and it's long term implications, and methods of ideology dissemination. I think most people would agree with me, given that they knew the full scope of what I'm saying (I'm probably a bad explainer, and it's also really hard to compress years of research into a paragraph).

Representation is not an indication of sexism/racism taking place. You can't infer that a lack of one group means that group was discriminated against. It's like women in STEM. Women aren't interested in STEM. That results in there being less women in those fields. It doesn't equate to them being prevented from entering based on their gender.

And yes, hiring people specifically based on their race or gender = racism and sexism, because in order to do so you MUST discriminate against OTHER groups. IE, to fulfill gender quotas for hiring WOMEN, you must inherently discriminate against equally qualified male applicants. To fill hiring quotas for minorities, you must by definition turn away equally (and often superior) qualified white applicants.

These practices are discriminatory by their very nature.

Hollywood actor demographics aren't far off from actual U.S. population demographics. Makes sense, don't it?

So why institute affirmative action for Hollywood? Allow it to grow organically and don't pander to groups or endorse racism.

How about we fix the issues with Hollywood as a whole?

It's not my intent to discuss a quantitative representation. I'm arguing for a qualitative representation.

I completely support AA for schools, FYI. The affects of AA, in general, are overblown, and almost every argument against AA is rooted in a poor understanding of AA.

Failure to equivocate. Things have changed now, I was talking past tense.

Men are both the protagonist and antagonist of the stories. Notice how you automatically attributed these lead roles to men, and not women.

Lmao at you.

Or people could just do what they want to do in life without looking to Hollywood to tell them how to behave. That's always an option. Representation is meaningless. What you're pushing is identity politics/tribalism. Nobody needs to see people who look just like them doing things in order to know that they too can do those things. Women do not need female examples. Men do not need male examples. It should suffice to know that either A) Someone has done a thing, ergo that thing is possible, or B) Nobody has done the thing yet, which means you can be the first.
Do you think the 1st person to dunk a basketball had "representation" which they were able to look to as an example/gain inspiration from? Or did they just decide one day they were going to pioneer a new move in sports?
Did Amelia Earhart need other female pilots as an example, or did she just get in a fukcing plane?

black and hispanic actors have all been represented in hollywood movies for decades as leading or supporting actors. what is this even about? only ones who aren't represented or are caricatures still are asians. but they're not making a stink so no one gives a chit.

You're missing my point. It's not "tribalism". It's not about seeing someone similar to you. It's about ideology dissemination, and the perpetuation of certain false assumptions and stereotypes into society through Hollywood, as a result of qualitative misrepresentation in Hollywood.

Like the false perception that white males are evil oppressors? Or that there are more than 2 genders?

I can only speak for myself on this but as a white guy, i grew up idolizing and looking up to people like Bruce Lee, Sugar Ray Robinson and Mike Tyson. None of these people are white, idgaf about skin colour, its just pigmentation, it's the persons character that matters. Ironically it's people on the left that need to realize this more than anyone right now.

Damn racists!
The more i learn about people, the more i like my dog.

There's already been a chit storm about The Shawshank Redemption and the lack of women in it, as well as Saving Private Ryan. Both have had videos made with the men cut out of it to show how necessary it is to foster representation in film, especially when it comes to women's stories.

Read up and get smart.

I dont get triggered ever. I dont even like the phrase. This triggered me hard. So freaking stupid. Almost laughable.

Its TV/Film for ****s sake. Women have had lead roles before and continue to get them. Other races have as well. Why the hell do they need to have this? Its not like hollywood is segregated......

They should go hand in hand because you're dealing with an actor pool derived from those demographics. Casting with a bias towards race/gender/political & sexual orientation is in direct conflict with qualitative representation and is a form of prejudice. So basically replace black people in 1950's cinema with white people in the modern age.

So even though you have a talent pool that's predominantly white, minorities are casted at an equal rate because of their minority status. So how does that make any sense?
