A popular dish at weddings and banquets in China, shark fin soup is increasingly off the menu due to a government frugality drive and awareness campaigns and by conservationists, according to a new report.

The trade in shark fins, a symbol of wealth in China and other parts of Asia, has led to the decline in some shark populations by up to 98% in the last 15 years. An estimated 100 million sharks are killed each year with up to 73 million used for their fins.

imagine if 100 million sharks wern't killed though. If 50 people die a year from sharks currently, add that chit up. That's 100 million more sharks killing people. That's like 50k+ human deaths a year. Something to think about before you start shouting but but but MA SHARKZZZ

What I meant was that bees going extinct could actually be a precursor to the end of humans. Bees are essential to our survival because of them pollinating plants that we and other animals eat (then we eat those delicious animals). Sharks going extinct would just be a blip on the radar while bee extinction would be like all of humanity trying to survive on the oxygen deprived air at the Mt. Everest summit.

It wouldn't quite have the same effect as bees, but that's because their disappearance would lead to a massive extinction of terrestrial plants and animals (including us). The ecological impact would still be huge though. For one, the jellyfish population, which is already getting out of control, would explode, basically overrunning the world's oceans and in turn leading to a mass extinction of marine life. As for how this will directly affect us other than our seafood, it's hard to say. Chances are that things could get ugly though.

And let's not lump all Asians together in this, though I know you *******s don't know the difference anyways. Shark killing is mostly a Chinese thing. As for whales and dolphins (and overfishing in general as well), that's the Japanese.

You obviously never been to China or Thailand. They don't like eating specific animals, they like eatinganyanimals. When I was there people even eating horse shoe crabs. People eating lizards, frogs, turtles, any mammal, insects, sea cucumber, pretty much any animals they can find they will eat. Nothing wrong with it other than the fact they don't do it sustainably, and are destroying our planet. Asia is the ones dumping all the toxic waste, garbage, and plastics into the oceans. Not in Hong Kong, but in mainland China, Thailand, India, and most of Asia they just throw their trash on the streets and waters.

I already knew which countries were largely responsible. One video I watched was pretty horrific. Workers pulling up sharks, slicing off their fins, dump their body back into the water, then they just slowly sink for a long death. Still, zero tolerance for sharks that are near popular human beaches. You have people even screaming animal abuse when a sharks that's killed a human is hunted.

Apparently shark fin soup is nearly flavorless, so it's just that sick prestige factor that draws people.

Thanks for that, i will admit i was wrong, BUT it is the Chinese desire for the shark fins that causes it.

Always hated Spanish fisherman, now its gone to whole new level. The Spanish fisherman suck the oceans dry and leave nothing. They even had altercations with other fishermen near the Falkland Islands and off the coast of Alaska (that near south and north poles).

The Chinese dont do the actual poaching of Rhino horns, but its their consumer demand that kills these endangered animals.

They're a big part of destroying the Canadian atlantic fisheries. We banned fishing in the Grand Banks cause all the fish were gone but spanish ships still kept sailing in for years.

But isn't it funny that euros convinced china to stop catching sharks and now they exporting sharks to china?
